Introducing evolve-D(earborn).   A Moodle theme that is based off More but with an abundance of enhancements that evolved into a new theme.  Evolve-D sports a clean, minimal design with a focus on simplicity to minimize distractions.   What makes this theme different is it's new approach to the Moodle frontpage.  Logged in users are presented with a custom homepage while logged out users get a beautiful login page with a fullscreen image background.  You can even opt to use the built in login form or the standard Moodle login form.  Each login form has unique styling and a beautiful fullscreen image background.

Features

  • Custom login page with fullscreen image background for logged out users
  • Simplified, custom Moodle homepage for logged in users
  • Two Column theme with blocks on the right
  • Support for Moodle's Socialwall Course Format.  If you use the Socialwall Course Format the evolve-D theme is the perfect companion as it contains super nice styling for the post interface and timeline posts.
  • Four image slideshow on custom homepage
  • Visual Separation of Topics/weeks.  Unique styling creates a visual separation of weeks/topics with the ability to customize the background color in theme settings.
  • Custom Logo
  • Marketing Spots at bottom of page
  • Fontawesome support
  • Custom Menu "My Courses" dropdown
  • General and Weather Alert notices for users
  • Custom Colors

Moodle 3.2 compatibility

Several people have asked if there will be releases of Evolve-D beyond Moodle 2.9 to be compatible with Moodle 3.2.  After much debate we decided the best option was to take many of the features from Evolve-D and to build a new theme moving forward called Fordson.  Fordson is a child theme of the new Moodle default theme Boost.  Fordson builds on Evolve-D by incorporating a better custom homepage with up to six marketing spots, custom page header image for both the site and individual courses, and of course... Style Presets which can transform your site to give it a unique look and feel! I am even working on an "evolve-D" style preset so that the content areas and blocks will have a similar look and feel to evolve-D with the great new features of Boost.

If you like Evolve-D, I hope you check out Fordson:  https://moodle.org/plugins/theme_fordson

Moodle 2.9 Note:

 If you are using Moodle 2.9 the default homepage for the site is the new User Dashboard. You need to change this in Site Administration > Navigation > Default Homepage for Users. Please force "Site" for all users if you want to use this Evolve-D's custom homepage with icons.

    You can also add 4 images for a slideshow on the custom homepage.

    Thanks for the info Chris! I installed it onto a local server on my desktop and am playing with it. My next question is a little trickier. I am just a teacher, so I don't have admin rights on our server. If I could convince our district admins to install the theme, is there a way that I could have two versions installed (one generic and specific for my course)? Would it be possible to go through all the theme files and simply do a substitution of "global_studies_evolve-d" for all instances of "evolve-d"? Perhaps it isn't something so simple. I am not a programmer.

    Brian, the theme is installed and set by the Moodle admin. You don't need server access, just access to Site Administration in the Moodle admin block. Only one version can be installed unless you copy it and develop your own as a secondary.

    Hi Chris, I should have been clearer. I am not an admin or have admin privileges. A secondary would be the way I would have to go, since the district would probably want to have a clean version of the theme installed for all to use. I would need to make a version specifically named for Global Studies, with out own colors, custom menu items, etc... (via the custom CSS settings) . Is creating a secondary more involved than just renaming references?

    There is a great tutorial. This is how I developed this theme: https://docs.moodle.org/dev/Cloning_a_theme Just started tinkering to make things look and function better for what we wanted to accomplish.

    Thanks! Once this school year is out, I will have more time to tinker with it on a local Moodle I installed. I hope you won't mind if I contact you with questions. I don't have a lot of things I want to change, basically just getting a second version specific for our Global Studies class. smile I want to try and find a working picture slideshow/slider code to insert in a label, so that each region we study (each Moodle section) can have pictures from the region rotating at the top of the course page (where the forum is).

    Hi Chris.
    I just wanted to point out that when you're customizing the courses page, rearranging the courses, the "stop customizing" button is hidden under the block, all you see is the "reset to default" button.

    with regards

    hi, are you aware of any issue with iframe and your theme? I can't seem to embed iframes (with youtube videos) into pages activity while the evolved theme is active. Could you please check if it a problem with the theme or on my side?

    I think the issue might be on your end. There is nothing in the theme that I can think of that would prohibit embedding content. We use YT video, voki's, etc. All just fine.

    Hi Chris
    I love the theme!

    I'm having some trouble with the frontpage backgroud image. Any recommendations for the size in pixels?. I've tried different sizes (from 750x500 pixels to 2000x1333 pix.) but I'm not very happy with the result.

    Additionally, I'd like to know if it is possible to set a fixed pixel size for the content area of the course (where the course appears). I'd like to embed an HTML5 file and I'm having some problems as the area is resized depending on the device and part of the HTML5 can't be seen in some devices such as smartphones or tablets.
    Thanks a lot

    I'm using your theme on a Moodle 2.8.6 installation. When I use Annotate PDF for feedback, the top of the window is obscured by the top navbar. Any idea on why it doesn't respect this border? This doesn't happen with the base theme.

    Alex,
    On my 2.8 install if I add this to the evolved.css it seems to fix the issue
    .navbar-fixed-top, .navbar-fixed-bottom { z-index: 2;}

    Hi Chris,

    Thanks a lot. There is a problem with "General Alert". (I use RTL style):
    When I set both "General Alert" and "Snow Alert" it shows the snow alert correctly but the general alert goes behind the navbar and users are not able to see it, until they resize the browser! (So when user maximize browser, general alert is not visible but when they minimize it, general alert appears). Any idea?

    Best Regards,
    Hamed

    I solved the problem by adding the code below to Custom CSS:

    #page-header-generalalert {
    margin-top: 4% !important;
    }

    But I thinks its not the best way. Although it solved the problem.

    Thanks Hamed. I will look and see if your solution works. I don't test it RTL so maybe I should start looking into how to make sure we are RTL compatible.
