Introducing evolve-D(earborn).   A Moodle theme that is based off More but with an abundance of enhancements that evolved into a new theme.  Evolve-D sports a clean, minimal design with a focus on simplicity to minimize distractions.   What makes this theme different is it's new approach to the Moodle frontpage.  Logged in users are presented with a custom homepage while logged out users get a beautiful login page with a fullscreen image background.  You can even opt to use the built in login form or the standard Moodle login form.  Each login form has unique styling and a beautiful fullscreen image background.

Features

  • Custom login page with fullscreen image background for logged out users
  • Simplified, custom Moodle homepage for logged in users
  • Two Column theme with blocks on the right
  • Support for Moodle's Socialwall Course Format.  If you use the Socialwall Course Format the evolve-D theme is the perfect companion as it contains super nice styling for the post interface and timeline posts.
  • Four image slideshow on custom homepage
  • Visual Separation of Topics/weeks.  Unique styling creates a visual separation of weeks/topics with the ability to customize the background color in theme settings.
  • Custom Logo
  • Marketing Spots at bottom of page
  • Fontawesome support
  • Custom Menu "My Courses" dropdown
  • General and Weather Alert notices for users
  • Custom Colors

Moodle 3.2 compatibility

Several people have asked if there will be releases of Evolve-D beyond Moodle 2.9 to be compatible with Moodle 3.2.  After much debate we decided the best option was to take many of the features from Evolve-D and to build a new theme moving forward called Fordson.  Fordson is a child theme of the new Moodle default theme Boost.  Fordson builds on Evolve-D by incorporating a better custom homepage with up to six marketing spots, custom page header image for both the site and individual courses, and of course... Style Presets which can transform your site to give it a unique look and feel! I am even working on an "evolve-D" style preset so that the content areas and blocks will have a similar look and feel to evolve-D with the great new features of Boost.

If you like Evolve-D, I hope you check out Fordson:  https://moodle.org/plugins/theme_fordson

The new 2.0.6 version added better support for translations and languages. There were a few issues that were quickly addressed in versions 2.04, and 2.0.5.

Thank you Chris. I was dreaming about a facebook kind of Social Wall to use as a learning method (Pedagogy is the right word?) for many years but did not have the skills to even try. You are my dream come true!

Awesome Gunasekar! I am on the team who created the Socialwall Plugin and I also tinker with this evolve-D theme. With my theme I tried to make it so that you could customize the Socialwall appearance by changing the background colors and other elements of the timeline. I also made the whole timeline and post appearance much nicer than if you use any other theme. Hope you enjoy!

I think you can replace line 831 with this:
    $description = get_string('socialwallheaddesc', 'theme_evolved');
It is just the admin page that displays some text about socialwall. Try that and let me know.

Hey, generally like the theme, but when I added a custom picture for the login page, it has these gray background boxes with gray text that have the instructions for email based self-registration ... anyway to change that (didn't see it very easily in the custom colors menu of themes) ... thanks for the help!

Kevin, Do you have Moodle set to force login? That sounds like the moodle login. The theme will use the Moodle login if you have it set to force it. Otherwise it will use the custom login form.

Hey Chris - thanks for helping me troubleshoot. I do not think so, though you'd have to guide me a bit further as to where that setting is located. I've tried to set it such that guests (like parents of my students) can still see the course page without logging in (so guest access is permitted and they are auto-signed in as guests). We get the login page when clicking the "log in" link at the top right.

Should probably also say that the gray text in gray box problem is only for the self-registration directions (not the login box that prompts for username and password) ... we are temporarily doing email self-registration as a way to get our students registered for accounts on our site.

Aha ... saw that there was an updated version to go to (I went from 2.0.2 to 2.0.7) and that seemed to resolve the problem ... text in the area I mentioned above is now white in that gray box, nice and visible.

Very nice looking theme overall - thanks for all your work

Hey, sorry my english is very bad.
With me on the side that is "custum menu" is not displayed and I can not find the problem. All settings as shown in the video are set. I use Moodle 2.9 and Evolv-D 2.9

    Do you have any idea?
    greetings Sio

If you are using Moodle 2.9 the default homepage for the User is the Dashboard. You need to change this in Site Administration > Navigation > Default Homepage for Users. Please force "Site" for all users if you want to use this theme's custom homepage.

    Hi Chris,

Kudos for a beautiful theme. I have "evolved" from the Essential and Elegance themes to adopting your Evolve-D theme this year. (I hope you do not get requests for an "Intelligent Design-D" version from creationist users!).

I have had a request to add a "Register here" button on the front page. In this thread, you previously mentioned (Mon, 9 Mar 2015, 8:30 AM) using the Force login feature to do this. However, this means the custom homepage is no longer accessed.

Is it not possible to edit the code with a simple "Register here" link?

    ***update***

I see that forcing users to login does not override the custom front page, so that is a workable solution. I would still prefer a more discreet "New user?" link on the front page rather than the full instructions for creating a new account -- it takes away from the beauty of the front page design.
