Introducing evolve-D(earborn).   A Moodle theme that is based off More but with an abundance of enhancements that evolved into a new theme.  Evolve-D sports a clean, minimal design with a focus on simplicity to minimize distractions.   What makes this theme different is it's new approach to the Moodle frontpage.  Logged in users are presented with a custom homepage while logged out users get a beautiful login page with a fullscreen image background.  You can even opt to use the built in login form or the standard Moodle login form.  Each login form has unique styling and a beautiful fullscreen image background.

  • Custom login page with fullscreen image background for logged out users
  • Simplified, custom Moodle homepage for logged in users
  • Two Column theme with blocks on the right
  • Support for Moodle's Socialwall Course Format.  If you use the Socialwall Course Format the evolve-D theme is the perfect companion as it contains super nice styling for the post interface and timeline posts.
  • Four image slideshow on custom homepage
  • Visual Separation of Topics/weeks.  Unique styling creates a visual separation of weeks/topics with the ability to customize the background color in theme settings.
  • Custom Logo
  • Marketing Spots at bottom of page
  • Fontawesome support
  • Custom Menu "My Courses" dropdown
  • General and Weather Alert notices for users
  • Custom Colors

Moodle 3.2 compatibility

Several people have asked if there will be releases of Evolve-D beyond Moodle 2.9 to be compatible with Moodle 3.2.  After much debate we decided the best option was to take many of the features from Evolve-D and to build a new theme moving forward called Fordson.  Fordson is a child theme of the new Moodle default theme Boost.  Fordson builds on Evolve-D by incorporating a better custom homepage with up to six marketing spots, custom page header image for both the site and individual courses, and of course... Style Presets which can transform your site to give it a unique look and feel! I am even working on an "evolve-D" style preset so that the content areas and blocks will have a similar look and feel to evolve-D with the great new features of Boost.

If you like Evolve-D, I hope you check out Fordson:

Moodle 2.9 Note:

If you are using Moodle 2.9 the default homepage for the site is the new User Dashboard. You need to change this in Site Administration > Navigation > Default Homepage for Users. Please force "Site" for all users if you want to use this Evolve-D's custom homepage with icons.

Thank you for all your hard work maintaining this theme. One of the things I appreciate about this theme is the bright green or red turn editing on or off buttons. When you do work on the theme this summer, would it be possible for you to add your button to the gradebook?

Also, the trend in design has been to flatten images and remove things like drop shadows and shading. Could we be given the choice between having shading on our blocks and a flat white.

    Thank you!

Wishlist: I'd love to be able to customize the top header color and the bottom border color of the header via the GUI. Thanks!

Glitch: I'm seeing an issue between evolve-D (2015092300) and the Grid course format in 2.9. Specifically, the blocks are being pushed below the main grid content area. Something with the floats is incompatible between the two.

Otherwise, I really like the theme and the Socialwall format!

Evolve-D was built with Moodle 2.7. It is a bit long in the tooth now. I have plans to update it for Moodle 3.1 but it may not happen as quickly as I'd like. I am also interested in the new theme developments for Moodle 3.2 in November which should have an enhanced navigation using breadcrumbs to eliminate the Navigation block. Pioneer is our latest theme from Dearborn Public Schools. It took a different approach and has some amazing features. We will be revisiting the future direction of Evolve-D when we see where the default Moodle theme is going in 3.2.

The next version of evolve-D will most likely be based off Boost. I am hoping to take some things from the Pioneer theme, this theme, and roll it out based on the new layout and features of Boost. Not sure if it should be a new theme or not. Evolve-D was created during Moodle 2.7. The code is quite old.

Hamed, because of the major changes in the default core theme (More to Boost) we decided it was best to go with the awesome new layout and features of Boost and we developed a new theme that has many of the same features as evolve-D such as the custom homepage (Now called Enhanced Homepage) but can utilize the new layout, Style Presets, and other options available in Boost. The new theme is called Fordson and can be found here: If you like Evolve-D you should check out Fordson. Lots of good improvements. We are hand crafting style presets that can instantly change the look and feel of the website without changing the features. There are currently 10 different presets to choose from!
