Hello there. First of all you might like to read through the documentation Managing badges and Using badges If you want badges awarded for completing an  activity then you should really make the activity first and set its completion conditions, because then they will appear as options when you create the badge. I'm not sure what you mean by "issuing badges by role" - this is when you choose who will be allowed to add badges in the course -eg a teacher or a non-editing teacher and it doesn't affect the students. If you want to award badges to a group of students it might be best to award them based on criteria so they are automatically awarded. However, if you are talking about awarding them manually then in the selection screen you can bulk select students so you don't have to award them one at a time. And for your last question, it means the notifications will come to you daily.
