A simple plugin that encourages students without needing lot of input from teachers.
The plugin is coded by Moodle Core developer, Fred Massart, so it can be relied upon.

This is a relatively new plugin, but it's a good example of the use of events to gamify a course. The English translation could be improved, as could the documentation and help strings. It's good that it works out-of-the-box, but the process of adding more rules doesn't seem intuitive. I think the CRUD terms should be spelled out. Each rule should have a simple explanation so students can be told how they can earn points, for example "create something", "read something"...
General recommendation: An easy choice for all sectors were self-pacing is important. Simple and well coded.
