Hello Felipe,

As Timothy says, you can make the Journal module visible by accessing the Modules section in the Configuration panel (you need admin access rights).

The reason that it is invisible is because it has been superseded by the improved 'Assignment' module (not the exercise module). Within the improved Assignment module you have a choice of 3 assignment types:
  • Offline activity
  • Online Text
  • Upload a single file
If you select 'Online Text', the next window you see has the following instructions:

This assignment type asks users to edit a text, using the normal editing tools. Teachers can grade them online, and even add inline comments or changes.

(If you are familiar with older versions of Moodle, this Assignment type does the same thing as the old Journal module used to do.)

When I upgraded from 1.4.4 to 1.5.2, all of my Journals were automatically converted to this new Assignment module. I think you'll find this new version much better than the old Journal module.

Hello Juan and the other DFwiki developers,

I think I have found the cause of the problem with the HTML editor and DFwiki that I described above, which is that the HTML editor is unusable in DFwiki when using Windows XP pro and IE6.

It seems that when certain blocks are activated, the HTML editor becomes unusable; i.e. it appears as in the screen shot below:

missing HTML editor

It seems that this problem only occurs when the following three DFwiki blocks are visible:

    Administration tools
    Contribution
    Page Synonymous

If these block are closed, the HTML editor becomes usable again.

This problem occurs with Windows XP pro and IE 6, but does not occur with Firefox 1.5 for the Mac.

Has any one else experienced this problem?

Joann,

Ray is right. Just to add to his message, you'll find the newer version of the Workshop module much easier to use. In the set up screen for a workshop you'll find the following 'date & time' settings at the bottom:

Start of submissions:
Start of assessments:
End of submissions:
End of assessments:
Release Teacher Grades:

These settings replace and automate the 'phases' of the old Workshop module.

Joseph,

"...but is there a way from within one Moodle Course (being logged in as teacher) to directly access the "questions database"?"

Yes.

In any course, click on 'Quizzes' in the Activities block. Then in the top right corner you will see an [Edit questions] button. Click on that wide eyes.

Matt,

"but I can't work out a way to give 2 marks to each essay and have the aggregate displayed in the grade book"

How about using the Workshop module?

If I was going to use the Workshop module in order to assign 'split grades' to a piece of work, I'd set up the workshop in the following way:

Grade for Assessments: 0 (or higher if you wanted students to self-assess, and then give a grade for this self assessment)

Grade for Submission: 100 (or less depending on 'Grade for Assessments' mark)

Grading Strategy: you choose (if you're are only going to have 2 criteria, I'd use the 'Accumulative' strategy)

Number of Comments, Assessment Elements, Grade Bands, Criterion Statements or Categories in a Rubric: 2

Number of Attachments expected on Submissions: 1

Allow Resubmissions: Yes (to allow students to improve their work No (to be strict)

Number of Assessments of Examples from Teacher: A good idea if the teacher has time to make the examples

Comparison of Assessments: not relevant if there is no peer assessment

Number of Assessments of Student Submissions: 0 (i.e. no peer assessment)

Weight for Teacher Assessments: not relevant if there is no peer assessment - although may be relevant if you require self assessment

Over Allocation: not relevant if there is no peer assessment

Self Assessment: probably yes

The other selections should be fairly obvious.

I think this will work.
