Because "their" is a commonly accepted term for his/her when you don't know if the person concerned is male or female (although I know what you mean smile ) I think "an assignment" could mean anybody's assignment, although again, I know, it would only mean one of the student's own assignments. The place to change wording is in Site admin>Language>Language customisation.

Hello William. Unfortunately you have never been able to enrol cohorts into courses from a category (as mentioned in an earlier post) In  terms of finding your cohorts, it might be that they are system cohorts and not category cohorts, and that is why you cannot find any cohorts when you look in the category. You will only see sysem cohorts on the main admin page, not on category pages and on the category screen you will only see cohorts which have been added to that category. (The search cohorts facility has been much improved in Moodle 2.8 by the way. See Cohorts

Users can view the list of courses they can enrol in usually even as guests by going to YOURMOODLE.com/course/index.php View courses without participation  is for being able to actually get inside the course without being enrolled in it.
