But then again, your all-CSS solution is also not available to "ordinary", non-admin users. I would love to see CSS in the course level, which non-admin-yet-css-proficient users could use for improving look&feel of their course site.

Shouldn't be difficult. Simply add a link to the RSS. The browser will display the content.
It may work if you enable RSS for the forum, set to 'posts' and 1 article, and then display the RSS in RSS block on the main page or in some other way.
Have you tried the settings in the 'My Report Preferences' tab? Can you attach a screenshot?

If you disable Adaptive mode subsequent attempts still preserve previous responses but do not indicate which responses are correct. The student will have to review previous attempts for that (assuming that score is available after the attempt).
