I agree with you that the roles in 1.7 could have used a couple more months of testing, refinement and documentation before an official release. Many of the "problems" were actually related to the trouble people were having understanding the new system (I don't blame them, it's a huge change!).

That's one of the reasons why I've slowed the 1.8 release right down. All we've been doing for the past couple of months is fixing bugs and polishing things up. We've back-ported many fixes to 1.7 too - 1.7.2 is much improved over 1.7 so please upgrade if you can.

And 1.8 Beta has further roles-related changes that were not possible to port to 1.7, it'll be much better than 1.7.x in my opinion. The release should be pretty soon.
