500 Internal server error - Installing Moodle 3.8.3

Hi All,

I'm trying to install Moodle on a remote server and get the error:

"Internal Server Error

The server encountered an internal error or misconfiguration and was unable to complete your request.

Please contact the server administrator at webmaster@mymoodle.co.uk to inform them of the time this error occurred, and the actions you performed just before this error.

More information about this error may be available in the server error log.

Additionally, a 500 Internal Server Error error was encountered while trying to use an ErrorDocument to handle the request."

This happens after the installation asks for the database details on page:  https://mymoodle.co.uk/administrator/index.php?lang=en.

Can anyone offer any clues as to why this might be happening please?

Cheers

Dave

Big clue - "More information about this error may be available in the server error log."

Go and look in the web server error log. A 500 error tells you nothing useful. Hopefully something more useful will be in the log

Also, it doesn't bode well that the server is so broken you got another 500 error trying to display the first error.

To follow up from Howard, check out the files in /var/log/apache2 probably error.log. (or very similar) Might be a permissions thing.

That's strange ... didn't think there was an 'administrator' directory in Moodle code.

And to add 2 cents ... depending upon how PHP is set up, errors could be recorded
in the directory where the error occurred on some systems.  Since installing, check
the /admin/ directory for an error_log file in addition to the main error log file.

Thanks Howard, Ken, Marcus,

I didn't have access to the error logs on the server unfortunately although it did add a not-very-useful copy of the message into the file /moodle/error.log!

The /administrator/ redirect was the big clue I'd missed (cheers Ken). There was a redirect in place as the company was also using Joomla hence the redirect to /administrator/ that was occuring.

Thanks again everyone.
