Disable a quiz once a pass mark is reached?

Disable a quiz once a pass mark is reached?

Is there a way to prevent a student from submitting on a quiz once they've already passed? We have thousands of students on the system and a large number are resubmitting again after they've already passed which is wasting time with our markers.

Thanks

Does your quiz have essay questions in it? And is this the problem, that instructors find themselves regrading an essay question?

Yes that's right, they're manually graded questions. It's set to build on previous answers also, so it's easy for someone to just click and resubmit the same answers again.

I, of course, do not know exactly what you are doing. But let's say the minimum passing grade is 60%. A student takes the quiz, and gets a 62%, and you want to not allow this student to try again. But another student gets a 58%, and is allowed to try again. On the second try, this student gets 95%. Is it really fair to allow the poorer student to try again, and on the second attempt to far surpass a student who "passed" this quiz on their first attempt?

As another idea, why not convert the essay questions into a different format, such as true/false or multiple choice? I don't know your topic, but I wonder why a student does not get an essay question correct? If you were to convert to multiple choice, then you could have Moodle grade the quiz, allow "repeats," and decide upon some overall grading criteria, such as average of attempts, highest grade, etc.

Thanks Rick. They have to get 100% to pass, and they're allowed multiple attempts. The written answers are required by our awarding body.

I'll see if I can customise it to hide the button once passed.

Ah, I see. Your awarding body doesn't care if it takes teachers forever to grade open-ended essay questions. Consider having them do some grading so that they better understand the problem.  smile

Out of curiosity, do you ever have students who never pass?

I'm just the tech support so I'm a few layers removed from it.

Yes sometimes they fail to pass.

Okay, some fail. Now the question is "why?" Is it that they don't take the quiz, or that they don't re-attempt, or that after 10 re-attempts they still do not respond correctly to the essay question?

As you can see, I am back to my original idea about using multiple-choice questions, of course, randomizing the questions and choices.

Oh well, I know, your role is to support the wishes of your administrators, not to fix a bad process. smile

In the Moodle Tracker system, I am confident that there is a feature request for what you seek. Make sure to check and vote.

Reattempt checker (Available here https://moodle.org/plugins/quizaccess_reattemptchecker)

I Installed "Reattempt checker" works fine even though it said it does not support v3.0 outward (I am using V3.5 moodle)

I put an absolute number(*actual grades from the quiz) in "To reattempt the quiz, require a grade less than" in quiz`s setting so they can not attempt on the quiz when they got 100% or passing grades

(*Prevent re-attempt when they got 100% (*actual grades from the quiz) on the submission)
