Quiz: Passwort settings via Group Overrides and via Extra Restrictions On Attempts by using Groups

Dear Community,

I refer to the Moodle Tracker MDL-67141:

If you create a quiz, assign a Group to this test, set a password in the Group Override-Settings and copy this quiz to a new quiz, the Group Override-Settings will also be copied. If you set a new password in the new quiz via Extra Restrictions On Attempts, this passwort is not valid for those students which are also enrolled in the group for the first test. In the Moodle Tracker you can find a detailed workflow to reproduce the problem.

The problem is, that this situation is confusing for teachers and students. Although the teachers set a new password for the second quiz, the Group-Override-Settings of the password of the first quiz is active. Teachers could edit Group-Override-Settings before, but often they forget or use this function only during quizzes if they want to change time settings.

I'm not shure how to improve or solve this problem, but maybe there could be a technical solution or other improvement. What's your opinion?

PS: we are using Moodle 3.5.7+

Best regards, Anton

Hello Anton,

In the tracker, Tim mentions "That is the expected behaviour." and "...see what other people thinkthoughtful...

Copying a quiz can come in handy, but is sometimes confusing. For example, when copying a quiz, you may think that the questions are copied, while in fact only the links to the same questions are copied. So, if you edit the questions of the copied quiz, you also edit the questions of the first one. It's confusing when you're not aware. Your issue is another example of the confusion that may occur when copying a quiz.

I would suggest that you do not copy quizzes. Create new ones from scratch. I does not take much longer to define the quiz settings again and you will thus avoid any confusion.

Unless... if you go into the original quiz and move all of its questions from the course-level quiz bank, into the quiz-level quiz bank, then when you copy the quiz, it will create new and unique copies in the duplicated quiz's quiz-level bank.
