Best video format & software for mobile user (iphone) compatibility

Summary:

Which video format should I use in Moodle activities (e.g. html5) and what software (e.g. VideoStudio Pro X8) do users recommend to record these videos to ensure good usability across devices and operating systems, particularly basic iPhone users.

Full:

I am looking for a reasonably priced video solution and approach that is compatible with as many mobile and desktop users as possible (and also on the Moodle App, if possible). I'd like to avoid any poor UX approaches such as users having to install plug-ins, browsers, enabling features, etc. So, I'd like to know (1) what software to buy/download  and use and (2) what format to export. My research so far has led me to use VideoStudio Pro X8 and export to html5 as a best solution.

My sense (unconfirmed) is that html5 typically uses neither javascript nor flash so will basically work on anything but has less functionality than most SCORM packages. So that is not a great answer, but a sufficient one. Sounds like there may exist SCORM approaches that don't use flash, and the best answer I have to this so far was this previous post (https://moodle.org/mod/forum/discuss.php?d=152379)  but these seem a bit too technical or unverified.  VisualStudio can screen record, has good reviews, and is affordable. We're not doing a whole lot on that end so it seems more than enough for my needs.

Thanks!

Tom

Have you tried avidemux (windows, linux, mac) or openshot (Linux only). Both free & open source just like moodle and linux.

I would also like to hear from experienced users in video with moodle, as I have just started taking interest in this topic. I can't use videostudio being a linux user.

Thanks John, I'll check those out.

I went through the Moodle directory and emailed a few of the largest Moodle sites in the USA to ask them as well; hopefully someone is kind enough to weigh in.

I'll post anything useful

I didn't know there was another moodle forum. Has USA got their own ? I thought they were all here.

I may not have been clear there; I went to moodle's listing of the largest US sites, then actually went to those sites and personally emailed the admins asking for their help.

Not a great chance of hearing back but exactly the people who would know best.

Tom,

IMHO there is no one format which will play on all browsers / operating systems with the native HTML5 player. However your closest match would be MP4 format. As far as I know MP4 will play as HTML5 video on all bar Firefox... Firefox needs Webm or Ogg Theora Vorbis... https://developer.mozilla.org/en-US/docs/Web/HTML/Supported_media_formats

There is of course another caveat... iOS devices have a very specific requirement for how your MP4 has been encoded... In a nutshell it must be encoded with the Baseline Level 3.0 https://developer.apple.com/library/ios/documentation/NetworkingInternet/Conceptual/StreamingMediaGuide/FrequentlyAskedQuestions/FrequentlyAskedQuestions.html

In all honesty I gave up trying to get a locally encoded piece of video to work in all devices with the HTML5 video plugin and just went back to using YouTube and letting Google sort out the format for different devices!
