WOW has moodle ever changed! It's beautiful and elegant, amazing!

Could some one fill me in on the major changes since 2.3?

I now work for a University, and am their Moodle guy. Couldn't be happier!

Hello and welcome backsmile

You might like to take  a look at our user-friendly pages of new features for the recent versions:

(We didn't have a special page for 2.4 but you can see the new features highlighted here on the category page.)

Good timing, 2.7 is great and 2.8 looks better smile

For us Bootstrap themes made a big difference, some nice course format plugins are now available. Performance on clusters is much improved in 2.7. Auto saving of quiz which notifies you of connection issues, pdf annotation on assignments, better control over notifications to students for assignments.

Really 2.7 is a real leap forward in many areas from 2.3.

Welcome back Andrew.

  1. Moodle has possibly become less friendly to smaller institutions, and seems to tacitly have moved to a place where you 'need' a repository, and is more catering for the big HE install or the corporates.
  2. If you are wanting some small places to start developing, there is no way at the moment to quickly drag and drop video into Moodle.  It's hard coded for a small size.  https://tracker.moodle.org/browse/MDL-47049
  3. If you are not careful, you can end up with a lot of files in your Moodle that need individual deleting.  https://tracker.moodle.org/browse/MDL-36121  Then you have no file size on disk reporting.  (But this is coming!!)
There was a request for report suggestions here: https://moodle.org/mod/forum/discuss.php?d=261049
  4. Private files: the new default inbuilt repo: eg https://moodle.org/mod/forum/discuss.php?d=268909#p1161292 Lots of people are using this, which personally I dislike.  smile
But you CAN delete a whole folder at once: https://moodle.org/mod/forum/discuss.php?d=270040#p1166230
  5. Themes.  As someone has said, Bootstrap is great.  Check out Essential and Elegance.
  6. New editor.  Chem and Equations seem to be going well.  Grumbles about colour of the icons.  But in the long run it should be better.  https://moodle.org/mod/forum/discuss.php?d=270700
  7. Change a password?  You can now get it emailed to someone from the users list.  But I suspect you will not need this, you probably have authentication outside Moodle.
  8. Permalink on Forums, reply by email (coming), subscribe at thread level (here I believe), Drag and drop of images (maybe coming - Please vote: https://tracker.moodle.org/browse/MDL-43996 ) Inline editing (Stalled, please vote: https://tracker.moodle.org/browse/MDL-33692), Save draft (coming I believe), Right click for spellchecker (Whew!!)
  9. TONS of nice plugins, which make upgrading challenging.
  10. Quiz: see Tim's request for feedback for the new editing interface.

A very idiosyncratic list obviously.  I remain concerned MoodleINC in general is not really looking at nice workflows that are effective and efficient for the key roles regular users need.  In key matters, there is still often an inefficient pathway or a hack needed.

Otherwise, much of the usual is there that you'll have known from 2 years ago.

Cheers, and Good luck.

Thanks for such a in depth reply.

I've already jumped right in to plugin development, database objects and all that good stuff that I was afraid I'd have to relearn.

Thanks to every one else who posted, all your feedback is super helpful! Cheers, and see you around the forums.

This is Good Andrew.  From what I hear, there are lots of goodies with hooks, API's, logging and other geek words.
