Portfolio module for Moodle, heavily based on the Book module for Moodle (http://moodle.org/) - Copyright (C) 2004-2011 Petr Skoda (http://skodak.org/)

Based on the book module, this activity allows students to create portfolio contributions, with a structure set by the teacher.
The course teacher(s) are able to create an overall structure for the students' work via a series of chapters and subchapters, the same as the layout found in the book module.
The course students are then able to add their own contributions based on this structure, which can then be commented on an graded by the course teacher(s).

Usage:

  • As a teacher, click on 'View/edit portfolio template', then create each of the chapters that you want students to contribute to
(note you must create all chapters before any students start contributing)
  • You can fill in each chapter with instructions / introductory information to help students.
  • As a student, select a chapter to contribute to, then click on 'Add contribution' and enter the text of your contribution / upload relevant files.
  • As a teacher, click on 'Submitted portfolios', then you can filter and search the list of students who have made contributions.
  • Click on 'View' to browse through a particular student's contributions and add comments to each one.
  • Click on 'Grade' to give overall feedback comments and a grade.

Intentionally omitted features:

  • more chapter levels - it would encourage teachers to write too much complex and long books, better use standard standalone HTML editor and import it as Resource. DocBook format is another suitable solution.
  • TOC hiding in normal view - instead use printer friendly view
  • detailed student tracking (postponed till officially supported)
  • export as zipped set of HTML pages - instead use browser command Save page as... in print view

Davo, thank you for your quick reply. I repeated the install steps again. Do see the Portfolio in the 'Add an activity..' menu, be able to start setting the Portfolio, like Chapter, notification etc, but when click on 'save and display', it shows: Error reading from database.

William - before I can do anything about that, you need to turn on debugging for your site and give me the full error message.

Hi Davo, thanks for the Portfolio Plugin smile
I have a question about it.
Can course students share their submissions with other students in the same course?

Virgilio - currently the Portfolio only allows students to share their submissions with the teacher, not other students in the course. It should be possible to allow sharing with other students, but that would require some developer time to add that feature.

Hi there - am having issues in Moodle 2.4 with it speaking with the gradebook. The grade just doesn't seem to stick.

Hello there. Thank you for putting this plugin together. I am trying out on a staging site but am getting some strange errors. I've submitted it as an issue on github: https://github.com/synergylearning/moodle-mod_giportfolio/issues/2

At one point we also got the below error, but have not been able to reproduce it, so I have not submitted it as an issue yet.
Debug info: Module giportfolio claims to support

    Is this compatible with 2.7.2?

No reason I can think of why it wouldn't be, but I haven't done any specific testing of this.

    Hello!

This tool is great. I have one question. I would like to have a groups of students working in single portfolio and the group settings in the common module settings would appear to support this. However, when I make contributions from separate student accounts in the same group, each student is unable to see the other's contribution. Am I doing something incorrectly or does the tool not support group/per portfolio structure. Many Thanks!

The tool does not support students being able to see contributions from any other students (whether in the same group, or otherwise). Possibly something that might happen in a future version...

Thanks for your quick feedback, Davo. I'd be really excited to see this implemented. Thanks for contributing the tool. It really fills a gap that where a lot of people have a need.

I've just installed this onto our test site and it looks great, but I can't see a tool for tracking progress through the portfolio (e.g. how many sections/chapters are complete vs availalbe) or a way of managing assessors - I want to assign specific assessors to specific individuals and only allow them to see those people. Does this exist somewhere I'm missing?

    Hi Laura,

Neither of those features were part of the requirements for the customer who commissioned this plugin. They could probably both be added, but it is unlikely to happen unless there was some funding available to pay for the developer time involved.

Thank you for this work and for making it available.
Given the current state of this project is it safe to assume that we could get a few years of service out of it? Without any money committed, can you predict? Thank you.

    Hi Dirk,

I can't make any absolute promises. The customer who commissioned the plugin is still actively using it, so it should be maintained for the immediate future (although there are some changes that I may need to copy back into the released version).
