Open forum are designed to increase engagement and provide a modern alternative to standard Moodle forums.

Open forum reduce complexity and work like the modern messaging systems students use every day on the web and their mobile devices.

Unlike standard forums advanced forums are responsive, so users can read and post from their mobile or tablet. Advanced forums have been specifically designed to improve the usability and accessibility of Moodle forums.

Posting and replying are all done via ajax to save page loads, take less clicks and increase engagement, while maintaining the user's context in a discussion thread.

Open forums contain a number of additional features including the ability to see who has engaged in a discussion before you open it, a setting to show recent forum posts on the course page, subscribing to individual threads, private replies and an option to allow anonymous posting, post bookmarking, along with all the features standard Moodle forums have.

Open forums are design by Blackboard in partnership with The University of Montana.

    Hi Kris

Is there a time frame for releasing a 2.7 version?

can you confirm whether the latest version of this plugin (2014021900) will work with moodle 2.6.2 please? I notice it requires 2013111803 which is moodle 2.6.3.

@Matthew - we are just now beginning our upgrade of plugins to Moodle 2.7. In order to get a community version out faster, our plan is to release an alpha version first. The downside is that will not have gone through QA, but will be available for the community to use and test much earlier than the stable version. We will likely be able to provide more information by the end of July.

@Jo - I highly recommend an updated version of Moodle 2.6 for security and critical bug fixes. Regardless, AvF should work just fine with Moodle 2.6.2. The reason we require 2.6.3 is because that is the version our QA testing is performed against. I don't anticipate any problems specific to 2.6.2, and if you'd like to use that version you simply need to change the requirement in mod/hsuforum/version.php

We downloaded and installed the Advanced Forum plugin (2.6), but don't see the option for Grading Method: Advanced Grading in the Edit Settings page for the activity. How do we access that?

@Tim - Advanced Forums does not have a built-in grading interface. Its grading is supported through an Advanced Grading Interface, which we are trying to contribute to Moodle (details are here: https://docs.moodle.org/dev/Activity_Grading_Interface_Specification). Thus, only manual grades are supported since you can modify them in the gradebook.

@Kris - Thanks for clarifying. But that's not how the plugin is marketed. The plugin description should be clear that Advanced Grading Methods are not currently supported.

I think the Discussion displays should be Settings and not an active option that any user can select themself.
Same with how the replies are displayed too. Though mostly just the Discussion display, that's much more important.

Also the text that says "# discussions" is unnecessary in pretty much all forums.
Also just wondering in what situation the Tree discussion disaplay would be suited for?

How do I hide the Forum administration options from students/users?
Or at least prevent students from "Export"ing the forum.
    Thanks~

Hi Nathan - In a future version of Advanced Forums, we will be consolidating the different views into a single one based off of the Accessible view, which should simplify the use cases in your first comment. You can control the ability to export a discussion by configuring the relevant capability, specifically mod/hsuforum:exportdiscussion.

The different views should be an option in the Appearance settings.
So that I could have one forum that is always in the Nested view, and another that is always in Accessible view.

Customisability is key to a good plugin, as rarely does everyone want to achieve the exact same thing.

(When) Will there be updates for 2.7 or 2.8?

Hey Kris, I was wondering if you are planning to upgrade this Advanced Forum plugin? We are using version 2.7.3 of Moodle and it obviously does not work. Do you have a timeframe for when that might happen? Alternatively, I would be happy to upgrade this myself or collaborate with you. Are there any specifics you could share about potential pitfalls for making this work with 2.7.3? Thanks, Zach

The new version of Advanced Forums for Moodle 2.7.3 will be made available in January. The updates include some major improvements, particularly for screenreader usability:

    * Optimized user experience with a single, modern, intuitive, and accessible forum view for all users that replaces the four previous view options.
    * Improved accessibility for users with screen readers.
    * Increased responsiveness and ease of use on mobile/tablet devices.
    * Improved user engagement and interaction as an assessment activity, a p2p and tutor communication tool, and a blog/information distribution tool.

Hi Kris, do you know of any way to move Discussions from a regular Moodle Forum to an Advanced Forum?

@Nathan - There's not a straightforward way to do it, it would need to be developed. We are considering adding this feature to a future roadmap, but would be happy to review any community contributions.
