Activities: Active quiz

Maintained by Picture of John Hoopes John Hoopes
Active quiz started originally as an update to the realtime quiz module, which has now grown into a separate module due to the very large functionality additions/changes. You will be able to offer in class quizzes on any device using a responsive theme, any question type from the question bank, use timed/not timed questions, grades reported back to the grade book, group quizzing (with a group attendance feature), view student responses in real time to offer in-class discussion about the results, and more!

This is a type of quiz designed to be used in face-to-face lessons, with a classroom full of computers/tablets/phones.

The teacher creates the quiz in advance - adding question bank questions from the Moodle question bank.  (This includes any question type available for Moodle)

The quiz can be set up to take the quiz in class groups (set up through the Moodle built in groups functionality).  Group attendance may also be used in order only give present group members the final grade.

During the lesson, the teacher starts the quiz. Students can now connect to this quiz. Once the teacher is satisfied that all students have connected to the quiz, they can click on "Start Quiz"

Depending on the question settings the question will end automatically, or will need to be ended via the instructor's "end question" button.  The instructor can review student responses in real time and re-poll the same question, go to the next question, or jump to any question set up for the session.

The teacher can, at a later date, go back through the results and, for each question, see exactly what answer each student gave.  Students will also be able to view their attempts based on the display options in the quiz settings.  Grades are also recorded based on the module settings for whether or not this particular quiz was assessed.

The original plugin (real-time quiz) was written by Davo Smith, to which the University of Wisconsin - Madison (funded by an educational innovation grant given to the Medical school) re-wrote the plugin, which is now named active quiz.

I seem to be stuck in a loop where it says "initializing quiz" but the quiz does not start. Any ideas? I am using Moodle 3.1.

I found a bug that if a teacher answer the questions as a test in an active quiz first, then students answer the questions, the response history is not shown in student point of view. The following the way to re-produce the bug.

After creating an active quiz, a teacher starts a new session to test the active quiz. The teacher chooses a choice in the question, then click the “end questions”. After trying all the questions in the active quiz, the teacher closes the session. And the responses from the teacher is stored in the “view responses” section.

    (Screen shot 2:

Then, the teacher asks the students to join in the active quiz in the class. The “fully anonymise student responses” setting is not ticked, as can be seen below. After students answer the questions in the active quiz, they cannot see the response history.

    (Screen shot 3:
    (Screen shot 4:

However, I duplicate the active quiz and keep the session setting the same with the one before. Then I let students to answer the question in the new active quiz, without teacher trying the questions at first, students can see the response history.

    (Screen shot 5:

Though a teacher is not a normal ”student”, it should not cause problem for the sessions later after the teacher answers the questions in active quiz. It is really confusing since many teachers are willing to have a try before using the active quiz in the class. And reviewing response history plays a significant role for students. I really hope this bug can be fixed soon.

Currently, the active quiz provides a bar chart of student responses for multiple choice questions. However, the bar chart is only shown during the time of that question. It will be a very useful improvement if the bar chart is stored and can be reviewed by teacher after the session is closed.

Could I know whether you have any plans to development this function, please? I am looking forward to hearing from you.

    Is it 3.2 compatible?

I'm looking for a Quiz plugin, which could put a timer on each quiz question. This one seems to have this, but... can it be used for online courses, where the students start the quiz at convenient for them time, and the teacher doesn't have to be present and to manually press start??
    Also, is it 3.1 compatible?

    Hi everyone,

I apologize for not responding to you sooner. I've now added a new version of the plugin with some very small bug fixes and cosmetic changes to have this plugin work for Moodle 3.1 and Moodle 3.2.

@Zhivko Zhelyazkov - This is currently not a feature of Active Quiz, but something that has been suggested, and something I'm thinking about adding.

@Yezi Yang - I can look at adding that to the list.

    Hi John

The current version cannot be installed in Moodle 3.1 (it doesn't pass the validation process), I wonder if there is a problem in the version file.

    Hi John,

I too am getting a version error when attempting to install this plugin. Here's what I'm seeing:

    Downloading mod_activequiz ... OK
    Validating mod_activequiz ... Error
    [Error] Required Moodle version [2016052304]
Installation aborted due to validation failure

    I'm running:

    Moodle 3.1.2+ (Build: 20161020)

Yes, I had to hack the version file to get it to install on 3.1.1+

I'm trying to make it work in Moodle 3.1.3 and yet no luck. sad

I added questions to the "Question Bank", but there's no question in the "Question List". I checked permissions and everything seems to be fine, besides that, even using Admin account I don't see question at the list.

    Suggestions? Greetings.

When adding questions from the question bank, would it be possible to bulk add questions, instead of having to select them one by one with the plus sign. I would like to add 30+ questions with three or four clicks so that i can add to the quiz quickly in class.
Thanks again for an incredibly useful plugin!

Many thanks for this plugin, as it provides a very feature to Moodle when used in a blended or F2F context. I have been checking how it works and I want to add a request related to the second @Yezi Yang's issue. I have seen that a barplot shows a summary of participants answers when using a multiple choice question but not with TRUE/FALSE ones. For us (HE virtual campus), this barplot or any graph making answers visually readable in a F2F context is one the critical factors for including this plugin in our learning environment, as it enables teachers to view a quick summary and launch a debate. Have you got plans for extending these graph to other question types? Many thanks in advance.

    Hi, Ramon,
I am the primary author for the IPAL (In-class Polling for All Learners, that does some of the same things that the Active Quiz module does. IPAL supports only true-false, multichoice, and essay questions. IPAL displays a histogram for both the multichoice and the true-false questions and displays the text answers for essay questions. I am interested in extending IPAL so that it will give a useful display for other types of questions. If you have any suggestions about how to give a useful display for teachers (and to "launch a debate") when using other types of questions, your suggestions would be very useful. Thanks.

    Hi Bill,

One advantage of IPAL that Active Quiz is missing is the ability to select multiple questions at once rather than having to click the plus sign over and over again. It also seems that IPAL is much "leaner" as far as performance, Active Quiz kinda lags my browser compared to IPAL. IPAL is missing a count down timer, but the instructor can just press STOP POLLING when he/she wants to end it for that quiz. Also you can run the IPAL quiz questions in any order which is nice.
