Hello. I know this doesn't help you at the moment, but in Moodle 4.0 a new activity completion condition for all graded activities - including Assignments - is to have a passing grade - like for a Quiz.

There are lots of ways you can gamify a course without plugins, for example for a Leaderboard you can use the Activity results block You can also add labels with restrict access for "stash/treasure/ a digital reward" to appear on activity completion. Have you tried the Introduction to Gamification course on Moodle Academy? I suggest you ask in the forum on there as there are many people with gamificatione experience on there.
