How have you set your role up already? (your "gradeviewer" role)?

Sorry to be late replying here but I also agree with Gavin and Howard. I thought orphaned activities was really cool when I first discovered it and used it in my school  -even making a video to demo it -but I have since had a rethink and actually no longer use it myself, partly because as Howard points out it makes it harder for less experienced Moodlers to use. (This was my actual experience in my old school) I now tend to go for simple options. I do however fully accept that large graphics and the like are popular with sites for younger children (also my experience)

Yes - that is the matching question type so it's strange you cannot save an empty question.  I have tried on a 2.6 Moodle and was able to do this. My first suggestion is to rebuild the question over again and see if you have the same problem.

Sorry I am confused - are you using the Quiz matching question type here? http://docs.moodle.org/en/Matching_question_type Yours look like separate questions?
