Hello.

1- When creating or updating a glossary, one has the option to tick the box:
Automatically link glossary entries:
2- Then, when adding a new entry to that glossary, one again has the option;
This entry should be automatically linked

1. Since the main way for students to access a glossary will be through the automatically linked words in resources & activities, I don't quite see the point of not automatically linking glossary entries. However there may exist cases where the glossary will be used "on its own", as it were, in which case that option will prove useful.

2. On the other hand, once a glossary has been created with the "Automatically link glossary entries" option set to Yes, I fail to see the logic behind having to click again - for each and every new entry- the This entry should be automatically linked option!
The way things stand look so illogical to me that I often forget to tick that box and am puzzled when words are not autolinked in the resources...

3- Again I do accept that there might be, within an "automatically linked" type of glossary, a few instances of entries which should NOT be autolinked (why? I wonder), but it would be more logical if - in that type of glossary - entries were by default linked (still retaining the possibility to have some not linked).

To sum up my wish:
When a glossary is created with the Automatically link glossary entries is set to Yes, then for all new entries, the This entry should be automatically linked box should be checked by default.

I will post a bug report to that effect, but am waiting first for fellow moodlers' opinion on the topic.

Hello!
In one English course for French students I have 2 glossaries: a vocabulary glossary and a grammar glossary.
I have found that, if a certain word ("concept") exists in both glossaries, then a click on a linked word in a text resource will display the entries in both glossaries, which is great.

I also make some use of the keywords facility in both glossaries. And there lies my problem: if a certain word appearing in a text resource is present in one glossary as a concept and in the other glossary as a keyword, the link only points to the entry which has the linked word as a keyword, not to the entry which has it as a concept.

Let me take an example.
In the Vocab Glossary I have:
Concept: knowledge
Definition: the things that you know.

In the Grammar Glossary I have:
Concept: uncountable nouns
Definition: uncountable nouns cannot take the plural
Keyword: knowledge love hate education (etc.)

Text:
The new technologies are a good way to develop our knowledges. (student post on forum).
The knowledge link only points to the Grammar Glossary entry (Concept uncountable nouns), it does not also display the entry from the Vocab Glossary. Too bad!

The pedagogic reason behind the desired - and presently unachieved behavior - is to present the student with both a correction of their mistake (no plural here) and a reminder of the meaning of the word.

Am I stretching the Glossary module beyond its present capacities?
Any idea, anyone?

Hi Graham!
I expect that since last June you have found workarounds for the problem you mentioned in your post.

You'll be glad to hear that this bug has been solved in version 1.5 dev.

As for version 1.4.3 which I'm using at the moment, the behavior of linking to keywords is rather strange, as you mentioned and as shown below.

1- Create a new word, enter Concept = Teachers
Keywords:
  • teacher
  • teachers
  • tutor
  • tutors
  • course creator
  • course creators
Autolink: Yes
Case sensitive: no
Match whole word: yes
Description: Blah Blah Blah

Create a resource, e.g. a web-composed page with this text:
In my class there is one nice teacher and two old teachers and a nice tutor and many course creators. They are all Teachers.
Result of auto-linking:
In my class there is one nice teacher and two old teachers and a nice tutor and many course creators. They are all Teachers doing their teaching job.

2- With same glossary & same sample text, only set the parameter Match whole word to No (i.e. do not tick the box) and here's the result:

In my class there is one nice teacher and two old teachers and a nice tutor and many course creators. They are all Teachers doing their teaching job.

et voila!
