I've been digging around and researching this for days and I can't for the life of me find an answer to this...

What I want is to be able to have a stand-alone page for each course to describe the course in detail...images and such. So far all I'm seeing are very limited options, and nothing that is on a separate url that can be linked to that is available for viewing without creating an account and logging in.

I would like my course thumbnails to link to a detailed description page that people can read long before they ever sign up....but everything that I have is short and necessary to log in to see.

I even tried looking for an add-on to make this possible, but so far I'm not finding anything that works the way I want.

Is this something that is possible?

I am no coder. So I need something already in existence or that is really easy to walk me through step-by-step how to do it if there is coding involved.

Any help is appreciated! 微笑

Moodle in English -> General help -> deleting 301 redirect

Tina Smith -

Let's see if I can explain this in a way that's not confusing...

So I have a Moodle install on a subdirectory of one domain (let's call that site 1). And another domain (let's call it site 2) that I was using for other purposes. Site 2 I had redirected to specific pages a wordpress install on the main directory of site 1 (long story, but it made the most sense at the time).

Now I have decided to use the domain for site 2 for a new purpose that involves the Moodle install on site 1. So I want to move the Moodle install from site 1 to site 2's domain and stop redirecting site 2 to site 1 and have it back to it's own space.

I already deleted the 301 redirect for site 2 to site 1 on my cpanel. But it's still redirecting.

So at this point I'm unable to do anything on site 2's actual location until I figure out how to get it to stop redirecting.

In hindsight, I do realize that I should have done a temporary redirect, not a permanent. But at the time, I didn't know I'd be coming up with this idea. I thought it WOULD be permanent.

SO, my question is....HOW do you permanently CHANGE a 301 redirect to get it to STOP redirecting so I can install Moodle again in the new location??

I was tidying things up and deleting themes I no longer use. I didn't realize that the Clean theme was part of the core. It apparently immediately broke my Moodle install. That's what I am thinking is what broke it, after doing some googling and finding out that Clean is part of the core. I also deleted Boost, if that's relevant.

This is the error message I am now getting for my site:

Coding error detected, it must be fixed by a programmer: page layout file [dirroot]/theme/base/layout/general.php does not contain the main content placeholder, please include "<?php echo $OUTPUT->main_content() ?>" in theme layout file.

So I read that I should just download and reinstall it...only I cannot find it anywhere to download! Does anyone know where to find it or do I have to completely reinstall again? I just updated yesterday and was hoping not to have to do it again...PLUS I now cannot put my site in maintenance mode because I cannot even get into it. I don't know how to access via command line...although I did install and figure out Putty at one point months ago, I've since completely forgotten everything I've learned. So if I have to put it in maintenance mode that way, it's going to be a whole process of me relearning all that. Which will take a lot of time. I'd much rather be able to just download the theme and upload via my cpanel, if that's possible? Seems like it would be easier...

But any suggestions anyone has are greatly appreciated. And I've certainly learned a big lesson here. DON'T mess with the Clean theme! Sheesh, wish I had known that!

My courses are self guided and I am finding that people appear to sometimes forget about them after their initial sign-up. I think they could benefit from a reminder email. Is there a way to have Moodle set up to automatically email users that haven't logged in in x amount of months to give them a friendly reminder of their course? Or is this something I'll have to periodically do manually?

I just updated Moodle a couple days ago, so I have the latest install.

Moodle in English -> Teaching with Moodle -> Moodle vs hyperdocs

Tina Smith -

I am not advocating using hyperdocs instead of Moodle...I get that there is a huge difference...

What I am trying to wrap my head around...since I have zero experience with hyperdocs (only recently learned of them), and have much more experience with Moodle...is how the 2 compare and contrast and what sorts of situations would call for one over the other.

I figure on a forum like this there MUST be teachers here that have experience with both.

So my first thought is that most likely, hyperdocs is for classroom teachers that lack the time, patience and/or tech savvy to tackle Moodle. (Not that I think Moodle is super complicated...but there's definitely a learning curve.)  What I see as a possible problem with them, however, is that I don't see a way to lock down text so that students cannot edit the sections of content that you don't want them to. Maybe it wouldn't be an issue...perhaps older students....or perhaps if you have students working on their own copy...but that just seems like something that would really bug me.

And it does seem to me that Moodle has a hell of a lot more options to be able to add into the experience...but perhaps some teachers and students prefer the simplicity of hyperdocs?

OR, maybe they are just different, to be used for different purposes, at different times?

I'm just curious what things there are to consider about these 2 options....I am thinking more from the student end. I feel they are both very beneficial...and perhaps just a matter of personal preference?

But I would love to hear from people that have experience with both, what they feel are the pros and cons of each of these options as far as the student's experience?
