This is a fairly old thread. Course formats have come a long way since 2003 and the standard is being enhanced accordingly for 2.3. The most notable improvement is the addition of a default display of one course section per page. Hierarchy is then just a matter of navigation.

Sometimes you can rollback such a nasty typoed label by simply clicking the browser's back to go to the previous page which should be the label's editing page (assuming you have just added/saved that label) where you can either fix or clear the label and save again.
The My Moodle page is essentially a container of blocks. So what you need is a specialized 'Latest News ++' block which would display the rich content of the latest news.
Approach 1:
Add the passage in a description question and then the series of questions for the passage.
Approach 2:
In each of the passage questions, add to the question text a link to open the passage in a popup (for convenience).
Approach 3:
Add the passage to a glossary set to autolink, enable glossary autolink filter and add the name of the designated passage to the question text of the designated question. The passage should be automatically linked and open in an overlay.
There are other possible approaches including iframes, fixed overlays, etc.

"Unless they click the Site home link in the navihation bar."
If only the Site home link were in the navigation bar, but when 'my moodle' is set to default (or user preference and preferred by the user) it becomes the "Site home" for the user and the first link in the navigation bar. This setting can be forced or forced as preference by admin.
