This is a quiz so your Review Options may be the cause for the hide icon. You mention that there are no start/end dates. My guess is you have Marks checked in the Immediately after the attempt section but have it unchecked in the Later, while the quiz is still open and After the quiz is closed sections. Can you take a screenshot of the Review options section located at the bottom of the quiz's settings page?

  1. We would need to see a picture of your Categories and Items page along with some clarification on if the items are using the numeric scales Moodle already has created or if you are using custom scales to see if there is an issue.
  2. Yes; hidden items do still calculate towards the course total. I see that as a benefit to the teacher as they always see all grades listed in the Grader Report and if hidden items weren't calculated for teachers, then the teachers would get confused. If desired to not include hidden items, I recommend following the instructions found in this Grades FAQ guide.
  3. It sounds like you may not understand how scales work. The values you are entering are not numbers, they are rather strings of text. A custom scale of (0, 1, 2, 3) is the same as (cat, dog, bird, fish) or (124, tree, 67, football). They are just values to select from a pull-down menu. I recommend checking out the Scales Moodle Docs for further explanation and examples.
  4. The max grade and category total for quizzes is probably working fine because all the quizzes use a numeric scale vs a custom scale. Moodle will total up all numeric scales if the category aggregation is set to Sum of Grades.
  5. Category total does have a lot of useful value. For example, if a teacher has all the different types of activities (assignments, quizzes, attendance, etc.) listed in different categories, students can then see how they are doing in each area of the course. (Ex: John Smith has a 98% in Assignments category but a 67% in Quizzes category. John should really work to improve his quizzes.) I believe many of your problems are because you have custom scales being used in one of the categories and thus the issues explained above are happening. At my university we recommend our faculty use numeric scales so that students can easily understand their scores vs. having to figure out the different values of a custom scale. In addition, we disabled scales aggregating towards totals so none of our users are confused by custom score values.

Did the teachers enter a Post date that hasn't been reached yet?

There are three dates set when creating a Turnitin assignment: Start Date, Due Date and Post Date.

  • Start date - When students can start to submit
  • Due date - When students can submit until
  • Post date - When students can see grademarks and grades entered by their instructor

There should be a little plus "+" symbol after the roles that are left with that permission. Click that and you will be given the option to add back a role to that permission. Make sure not to select the plus symbol that is underneath Prohibit; that will take away access.

Note: Above example is screenshot from my Moodle instance. I have custom roles added that you may not have on your site.
