Based off the bottom image, you have each cell in the course total overridden. An overridden grade is indicated by shading the cell orange. By having the course total cells overridden, it will not calculate as you have in your Categories & Items. You may remove an override by selecting that Edit icon in the gradebook in the course total cell as indicated in below image.

  1. Attach one of the files you are trying to import so we can see if we find any errors.
  2. Another text editor you can try is Notepad++. It's mainly used for coding in different languages but should work fine for your purposes.
  3. When you originally using Notepad, where you making sure to save it as a .txt file with UTF-8 encoding?
  4. In regards to why you can't insert a picture into question text when editing a question, try refreshing the page. Sometimes the editor won't pop-up for each applicable field.

  1. When I have multiple items that aren't contributing to the course total, I put them in one category and call them "Ungraded items". By naming it that, it reminds me that they don't count and also that is for students knowledge who are checking their grades. I then collasp this category in the gradebook so that I only see the category total.
The Administration > Grades > Grade Settings > General Settings > Aggregate Position is for where the Course total will appear in the User Report (i.e. what your students see. If you want to see the Course Total as the first column in the Grader Report, instead select Administration > Grades > My Preferences > Aggregate Position.

Check your course settings to see if you have the gradebook hidden. (Administration block > Settings > Show gradebook to students) Once you do this, for students there should then be a Grades link in the administration block.

If after checking that they still can't see their grades, check the permissions for the student role to make sure they are allowed to view the gradebook.
