Journals are private, so you aren't meant to see other student entries. However (for a bit of peer pressure) you can see when other students have made an entry.
You were probably expecting more of a blog - in which case you'll like the new version of the journal module which will allow this as an option.

Moodle will run OK, you just won't be able to upload files. Any other PHP program will have the same file problems.
Note that you can still create resources on-line (in the database), or link to external resources. And people can have any image they want (as long as it's the default one

If it's a problem for your site, then I strongly suggest you look for another host (there are thousands out there!).

Nothing to do with GD ... the images are already created and stored as plain image files.
