Direct Link to File and pdf file display

Direct Link to File and pdf file display

Our site has upgraded from 1.7 to 1.8. In version 1.7 you could select a pdf file to display in a new window and it would display as expected in a new window with a single scroll bar. Now the pdf file shows up in a new window but the pdf document shows up as a window (or frame?) with its own scroll bar inside the browser window which also has a scroll bar. This is an annoying arrangement manipulating two scroll bars. At the bottom of the window is a link to "Direct Link to this File" Clicking this makes the pdf document fill the browser window and use the browser's scroll bar. The "direct link" is what I'd like to be the default display. Can this be done?

The URL for the window in window view is; http://moodle.wilson.edu/mod/resource/view.php?inpopup=true&id=4504

The URL for the desired "direct link" view is;
http://moodle.wilson.edu/file.php/261/Syllabus.pdf

I've tried entering the "direct link" URL when setting up the resource but Moodle treats it equivalently to just giving the file name. What is curious is if I go to the "Files" section and click on the pdf file directly then it shows up as desired filling the browser window with only one scroll bar.

Thanks, Perry Wood

I have seen this behaviour too and it is causing a lot of issues for us, not only with PDF files but also with flash shockwave files too.

I agree that the "direct link" should at least be an option when setting up a resource to use the old "direct link" option.

I have posted here about the issue I am having with shockwave files: http://moodle.org/mod/forum/discuss.php?d=110034

Perry,

I have raised this over in the general problem forum and Mauno has come up with a solution that has fixed our problem. It may well fix yours too.

Be sure to back up any files before adding these news to your system though!

I have a similar problem except that the document does not show at all until the user clicks on the Direct Link to File. The problem happens primarily in Firefox but seems to work in IE 8.
