I have just upgraded from Version 1.8.4 to 1.9.
I have fumbled my way through most of the new Grade Book, but I can not find a place to exempt certain students from certain assignments, nor can I find documentation to help me out.
Has this ability gone away in 1.9?

Never mind. I just found the answer in http://moodle.org/mod/forum/discuss.php?d=91957.
Assignments with "exempt" as the feedback will be exempted from grading.
Also, in the full grade report, one can click the edit icon in grade cell and then click exclude.
