Well, I think it's better this way. I felt that the headers of the grader report were very messy and confusing, especially in editing mode, with all these icons sort of floating around (just in the header cells, you have 3 places where icons are found: before the item name, after the item name, and finally the editing icons ).

Here is a screenshot containing a number of design improvements.

  1. A line break has been added after the activity icon, before the activity name
  2. The header cell contents have been aligned to the top of the cells
  3. The font size has been reduced
  4. The activity names have been shortened to 30 characters
  5. The editing icons have been removed from the header cells and placed in their own row, which is not displayed unless editing is switched on
I'm still not 100% sure what to do with the up-down sorting arrow, it would fit nicely in the icons row when editing is on, but when it's off it would be the only icon left in there, and only one icon doesn't really justify adding a whole row to the table. But there is no question that, wherever it is placed, it must be the same in editing mode and in normal mode.

Your input?

Each of your five changes make a lot of sense. I would give a thumbs up to all of them. In addition, we are finding that the right hand column describe in MDL-12132 (and controlled by the style sheets) is very helpful.
We went live with our whole high school with 1.9 last week, and would would be happy to give feedback once you have posted the changes to the SVN. None of these seem a problem.

These changes are now in CVS. Additionally, to maintain screenreader accessibility, the <img> tags around the icons have had their alt attributes upgraded. They now follow this format:

{action} {item category} {item module} {item name}

Examples:
Edit Quiz French defense opening

or

Hide Assignment Find mate in 34

The {item category} field is optional, it applies only to totals:

Lock Chess basics Category total

Nicolas:

While I have not checked with every teacher in the school, both for my own classes and those of several of my math colleagues, these changes have certainly helped. Thanks.
One issue that we are still having is that one of our common scales is "Not submitted/Submitted". This causes the columns to become too wide again, especially when range is shown. A fix for this would be good.
A second issue is that columns should be wide enough so that the text 100.00% does not wrap (or at least until everything else has been done to compact other columns).

We just put this live in our school this morning. As Gary Anderson pointed out we're running 1.9 as our production machine and any I will indeed post an feedback this generates. Thanks for the work. Looks good.

One question, where your screenshot shows icons mine shows controls when editing is on. What's suppose to be there? I'm thinking it's the arrows you mention, but wanted to double check and see if there's a fix.

Thanks again!

Hi Karlene,

We decided to change the string to controls, as "icons" wasn't very descriptive. The language file lang/en_utf8/grades.php has been updated, so make sure you have the latest version.

Nicolas

The new grader report interface is very good and this is only a minor issue, but is there away of keeping catergories minimized so that when you next log on the are still minimised. We are using a rather large report and this would really help.

Thanks
