Combine results of multiple attempts of the same quiz

I have the scenario

The learner needs to complete a quiz with 100%.

The questions are all essay style (more free text so some may only be a sentence or two rather than an essay) and the attempt may need to be returned to be corrected or to add more detail to a few questions.

Quite happy with the mechanism to allow an extra attempt, and keeping the answers for the second attempt.

But is there a way to combine the scores of multiple attempts to pass the quiz?

Eg

  • Attempt 1 8 of 10
  • Returned for a new attempt.
  • Resubmit and Attempt 2 only answer two questions and effectively score 2 out of 10
  • but over the two attempt the score is 10 out of 10.

Build on last attempt enabled - and the system recognises that the other 8 answers have not changed when attempt 2 has been resubmitted.

Is it possible to merge the scores automatically from Attempt 1 into Attempt2 so that it shows a total score? and records the learner has passed the assessment which opens up additional content. Rather than marking all the answers in Attempt2

This would need to be course specific rather than a system setting

If there's alternative approach happy to consider

From what you describe, I think the Diary plugin would be a good candidate for this scenario as it supports the Moodle Ratings Aggregate types of, No ratings, Average of ratings, Count of ratings, Maximum rating, Minimum rating, and Sum of ratings.
