Activity completion 3.11 'Mark as done' still shows.

Activity completion 3.11 'Mark as done' still shows.

Hi,

My school has upgraded to 3.11.

I am testing the new Activity completion feature.

For the moment, the settings in my course are on 'Do not show':

However, I can still see the 'Mark as done' button for activities which are set to manual completion.

As no more indications are given on the course page as to completion for activities which have conditions (since 3.11), this may cause confusion.

I need to keep completion tracking in the course, so I cannot remove the 'Mark as done' button by deactivating it. Have I missed something?

Thank you for your help.

Susanna

Hello Susanna. It's not actually all items with manual completion but just Files (I see you have a word document there for example), Labels and URLs. The reason for this is that depending on how you set the display for your file (or URL) it might not be possible to show the manual 'Mark as done' button when clicking on the file, so it needs to be shown on the course page. See the documentation Using Activity completion.

Hello,
Many thanks for clarifying the presence of the 'Mark as done button' even when 'Show activity completion' is set to 'off'.
To avoid the Scroll of death, I plan to set 'Show activity completion' to off.
As a trade-off, and to avoid the confusion caused by the presence of an occasional 'Mark as done button', I could insist (even harder) that students consult the 'Course completion status' block to see the completion requirements and status.
However, this revives a previous problem discussed with Gordon Bateson here: https://moodle.org/mod/forum/discuss.php?d=389927

The completion requirements are not shown for all activities (see below - the activities with no Requirement data are HotPot activities: the completion status displays as expected) . Gordon explained at the time that this was not related to the HotPot plugin.
Has there been any progress on this since, do you know?

Many thanks again.

Hello again,
Two types of activity (HotPot and H5P) will not show the 'Mark as done' button inside or on the course page.
The activities I have in my course are set to 'Students may manually mark as complete'. The setting for the course is set to NO for Show activity completion.

I would like the button to display so as to distinguish optional activties from mandatory ones (the 'Mark as done' ones are optional, and for students to be able to keep track of which optional activities they have completed.

In fact, in Editing mode, the behaviour is strange: when toggling between Hide and Show, the buttons will appear on the course page, but then disappear when I revert to Non-editing mode (student or teacher view). Sometimes they will show when the activity is set to Hide, or else set to Show, as below. The behaviour seems unpredictable.

Looking at your screenshot it seems you are using the old H5P activity plugin (which has a black icon) rather than the standard H5P activity included in Moodle (which is blue) I don't know for sure I but I suspect that is why you are having problems with the display. All the standard activites in Moodle including H5P have been made to work as you expect/ how I explained, but the contributed plugins I am assuming (and Hotpotatoes is one of them) depend on their individual developers to have made them work with the new activity completion. I am not a developer so I might be wrong but I am offering it as a suggestion as to why they don't work the way they should.
(I presume you have good reasons for choosing to use the H5P plugin instead of the standard H5P activity)

Is there documentation on how to switch from H5P plugin to H5P standard? I tried deleting the plugin thinking the standard version would take over. That wiped out all the existing content. I would like to move away from the plugin - but am just not sure how.

Thank you. The standard H5P has been activated on our Moodle site and all now works as expected.

Susanna, this "problem" was discussed in this topic, and it is included in the Tracker item MDL-71856.  I also find this to be a very awkward situation, which was not recognized when Moodle 3.11 Activity Completion was revised, and "fixed" with this less than desirable solution (of course, in my opinion.)

Consider voting for MDL-71856 if you agree with it.
