prevent students accessing quiz after half of time

Hi

the quiz starts at 4 pm and ends at 5 pm

it is an online quiz

Is there a way to prevent accessing this quiz after 4:30 pm

and the current students who access it before 4:30 can continue the quiz

I tried many restrictions in the restrict access setting in the quiz, but all did not work

is there a plugin in or any setting that can allow this

Regards,

I don't have a solution for you. But I will ask you "why?"

Hello M,

You could have a bogus quiz with a bogus question, for example a "Short answer" question where * i.e. any answer is worth 100%. Set the availability of this quiz only from 4:00 p.m. to 4:30 p.m.

In the settings of your real quiz and under "Restrict access", add a restriction that the student must have completed the bogus quiz, either with a passing mark of 100% or with any mark if you don't specify any.

Tell your students that they must  complete the bogus quiz to get access to the real quiz. Of course, don't tell them it's "bogus", tell them it's an "access procedure" or whatever. After 4:30 pm, as the bogus quiz is no longer available, students will no longer have access to the real quiz.

Hello Rick,

You have raised a question which is interesting to wonder about. Prohibiting students from taking a quiz, even if they are late, is this pedagogically adequate?

I teach young people at university and I personally wouldn't do that. It's easy to accommodate late students, especially with Moodle. Of course, they may have difficulty with punctuality, but I would let them do the quiz anyway.

I even think I would give them time to finish it, but that's just me. I may be too easygoing. Taking a quiz is part of the learning activities and, in my opinion, that is what matters first. I don't really care if a student is a little late.

On the other hand, I understand that other teachers can be stricter, and I believe that is good for the students as well. A little discipline, applied in the right way, can also help.

Thanks for your added thoughts, Dominique.

What I wondered about is that one student begins at 4:29, and is able to complete the quiz. Another student tries to begin at 4:30, and can't, gets a 0. Why does 1 minute make a difference in assessing what these students know or don't know? And if a smart student could begin at 4:45 and complete all questions successfully, is this really "bad?" This is why I wonder why this kind of restriction is desired, meaning "give a student a 0 if they don't begin within the first 30 minutes."  Also, what if that smart student "obeys" the rules, begins the quiz at 4:00, doesn't do anything for 45 minutes, and then successfully completes the quiz in the remaining 15 minutes?

In my own case, I would prefer to use a timed quiz, one hour in this example, and set the begin/end times to span a longer period of time, such as 3 hours.

Hello Rick,

I agree with you.

Knowing the mechanics of Moodle is one thing, knowing how to use it is another. Moodle's best algorithms will never replace the experience of a good old-timer teacher.

Isn't the discussion Locking candidates out of a quiz practically the same?

Hello Visvanath,

Thanks for stepping into this conversation and referring to the other one, where a better solution is given.

Indeed, it is much easier to have a link that points to a quiz in stealth mode, the link being accessible only for the desired time. If you don't have stealth mode enabled on your site, you can place the quiz on a hidden page.

Or maybe C Schipper's suggestion, similar to mine but with simpler access restriction, is even a better solution.

After considering the different workarounds, that is to say except the only proper solution proposed by Tim Hunt to develop a quiz access rule plugin, I came to the conclusion that the following solution was the most simple and most efficient. I put it under Prevent students from taking the quiz some time after its opening time ↗ in the Quiz FAQ on MoodleDocs.

Hello all,

This student was 20 minutes late for his class. His name was George Dantzig ↗. It would have been a shame that he had been refused entry. The video is a bit jazzy, nonetheless it would appear that it relates a true story.
