MoodleMoot Spain 2020: Students session summary

Hi everybody!

Last week, during the MoodleMoot Spain, several students between 14-17 years old shared with us their experience with Moodle during the covid-19 pandemic and some of the ideas/improvements they would like to find in Moodle.

I've prepared a summary in English (because all the sessions were in Spanish), trying to collect their main ideas.

As you'll see, a couple of conclusions can be raised quickly:

  • Some of the improvements are about existing features... So we need to make them more "visible".
  • They haven't met for preparing the presentation but most of them have similar requirements/requests/missing features.

I hope that helps and, of course, if required, they will be more than happy to talk with anybody in the UX team smile

Kind regards,

Sara

SOME IDEAS:

  • Add/facilitate access to tutorials to the platform (for teachers and students), because sometimes they don't find options.
  • Make the platform more interactive: let students organise the information
  • Although Moodle is accessible because let adding easily links and resources... Integrate Moodle with more external tools, such as genially. Moodle doesn't have enough resources, so teachers have to search for resources outside Moodle (genially, loom, zoom).
  • Desktop customisation for each student. They would like to organise their desktop, for instance, where to put notifications, pending tasks, classes/courses... Every student should be able to customise this information.
  • FORUMS have helped them a lot during the pandemic. They shared their opinion (using images, videos, documents) in forums about tasks they had to do.
  • EVALUATION. Adding grades or feedback is not easy for their teachers. Some ideas: use crosses/ticks in the jobs. Some tutorials about how to grade would be appreciated for the teachers.
  • PROGRESS ANALYSIS. They would like to see some charts with their progress in a visual way (not related to grades, related to concepts/competencies they have learnt).

INSTITUT VILADOMAT: A new world, a new Moodle

Júlia Casanoves, Carla Ferrer, Sergio Marín, Bruno Gosálvez, Somei Gibert

Recording:

WHAT IS MOODLE FOR THEM (USING A SINGLE WORD)?

  • Júlia: learning
  • Carla: opportunities
  • Somei: challenges
  • Bruno: study book
  • Sergio: work

SOME INITIAL COMMENTS

  • It's hierarchical, slow and non-intuitive.
  • During the pandemic, they use Moodle more than ever.
  • Their teachers use genially for adding direct links to the tasks: so it was easier to access to the activities.

ADVANTAGES

  • Email notifications (for instance when the teacher has evaluated some activity).
  • You don't need a lot of computer knowledge to use it.
  • Accessible from any device.
  • Secure platform.
  • Colours are attractive.
  • Useful icons (although some of them should be improved/updated).
  • The grade book and the summary of the qualifications.

DISADVANTAGES

  • Requires Internet access.
  • The same content is displayed to all the students (there is no way to select content depending on the student).
  • To access to an activity, a lot of clicks are required (that's why their teachers prepared "genially" contents, to save them these clicks and give students direct access).

WHAT THEY WOULD CHANGE/ADD TO MOODLE?

  • User interface: should be more intuitive. Besides, the first page should be adapted to each user, displaying their activities, courses, calendar...
    • Let Moodle adapt to users instead of force users adapted to Moodle.
  • New design: more attractive and modern.
    • New icons: based on flat design
      icons
    • Buttons: flat design /material design
      Buttons
    • Typographies: clean, readable versatile. Sans Sheriff style
      Typographies
    • Checkboxes: clean and dynamic.
      Checkboxes
    • Main page (dashboard): remove other courses and add more notifications
      • Let students personalise their main page
        Dashboard
  • Integration:
    • Synchronization with Google calendar (because they use Google workplace).
    • File manager. Better integration with Google Drive. They know it's integrated, but it's not good enough: small preview, hard to find content, not all the content is displayed...

HOW THEY USE MOODLE?

  • Download documents and activities.
  • Assignments: submission and also assessment and feedback.
  • Quizzes (even for exams in some cases).
  • Access to external links.
  • Communication with teachers.
  • MOODLE DURING PANDEMIC: Since then, Moodle was a complementary tool. It helped a lot to have the information organised (materials, assignments, quizzes...) and to communicate with teachers (forums, messaging...).

IMPROVEMENTS FOR MOODLE

  • Use it offline.
  • Reminders/notifications of the assignments the day before the due date.
  • Correct documents online (without downloading them).
  • Work on online documents with other students at the same time.
  • Online classes.
  • Training for teachers and students with all the options that Moodle offers.
  • A quick overview of all the assignments submitted/pending.
  • More attractive.
  • Make bigger the comments textbox.
