Moodle Quizzes during Coronavirus

Dear Moodlers,

I hope you are all safe and hopefully soon this crisis will come to an end,

I would like to start this discussion about taking Quizzes online during Corona-virus. Since no one knows how long this crisis will last and since everybody is turning to online learning using Moodle and other online tools, we came to the question of whether to make quizzes online or postpone them until further notice. Noting that, by quizzes I mean the type of the partial/final quizzes and not just a regular test/quiz.

For that, and in order to prevent students from having the possibility of cheating, I would like to ask

  • Are there any procedure/tips/suggestion to turn quizzes, that will be taken at home, more secured ?
  • Are there any existing or new plugin, that will add up to the security of quizzes ?
  • Are there any Moodler here who is already making quizzes online ? and if that is the case we really appreciate to share with us your experience.

Best regards.

Yes, there are ways to do this.

There was a really excellent webinar last Thursday. You can watch the recording by following the link below.

25 March 2020: Implementing remotely invigilated online exams at scale.
This session explored key lessons and successes of the University of New England's experience in implementing large scale remotely invigilated (proctored) online exams.
View and obtain resources http://taw.fi/25M2020

Also worth knowing about is Safe Exam Browser (https://www.safeexambrowser.org/) which has a Moodle integration: https://moodle.org/plugins/quizaccess_safeexambrowser. That is created by Zurich Technical University, which uses Moodle.

The other thing to think about is the assessment design. For example if you can come up with several variants of each question in a quiz, and build the quiz with randomisation, then each student will see slightly different questions, which reduces opportunities for collusion (https://docs.moodle.org/38/en/Effective_quiz_practices#Robust_testing_with_random_variants).

However, realise that there is not technological silver bullet that solves cheating. It is a people problem and you need a range of measures to address it.

We have implemented Respondus Lockdown Browser and Monitor for our quizzes which contain questions that we consider IP. It has integrated well with Moodle and I have to say I recommend it. https://web.respondus.com/

They have a 2 month free trial at the moment which makes the implementation phase a little less stressful.
