Getting the error:

Debug info: 503
Error code: err_response_http_code
Stack trace:
  • line 246 of \lib\classes\update\checker.php: core\update\checker_exception thrown
  • line 124 of \lib\classes\update\checker.php: call to core\update\checker->get_response()
  • line 211 of \admin\plugins.php: call to core\update\checker->fetch()
We have 5 sites running on a IIS  Server, this was working yesterday. No changes to the server.

Have done some searching but have not found anything that has helped.

Looking for suggestions as to where to start looking for ideas.

Thank you in advance.

Can't speak for Moodle HQ, but ...

Moodle.org is behind CloudFlare (CF).  To everyone's Moodle, the gateway to Moodle.org is CF.   So it looks like your server was checking for updates when CF wasn't talking to anything Moodle.org - that infamous 'Something is wrong with the Internet' page one gets.

Noticed it happened yesterday a couple of times but was cleared in a matter of minutes.

So your servers should be able to check for updates today.

Used to be a Twitter for Moodle.org where if there were extended issues with CF gateway a tweet would go out.

Thank you for the info. I'm still seen the 503 error on all sites. To test further, I quickly setup a moodle site on a different network and I am seeing the same 503 Error attempting to get updates.

Will monitor and hope things return to normal. Could this have to do with the latest core update? The notice went out early this morning.

Thanks again!

Well, you got the official word.  Couldn't back to this forum myself to respond.

Will share something you might want to bookmark/favorite or even a link in a systems admin course in your Moodle.   There's Twitter ... and there is:

Hello. Sorry for you troubles.

As has been mentioned on the twitter, some of our community sites are now under a heavier load and temporary problems like this can be experienced. The Moodle HQ IT department are on it. Please re-try later.

Thank you.
