Problem with Review options (Right answer)

Problem with Review options (Right answer)

Hi, there.

We're using Moodle 3.5.1.

In order to improve the look and completeness of quiz question feedback, we've been trying to progressively turn off the "Right answer" or "Correct answer" review option, as its formatting is not very pretty or useful, especially for multiple answer and matching questions. We're replacing with General feedback with current quizzes.

The problem is in how to control the impact of turning this option and off. Regardless of whether the option is on or off in the Quiz settings, it seems we have to also turn the option off or on in the "Display options" area when we Preview a question, in order for the option to "stick".

But when we set the option there, it then seems to apply to all quizzes in the system. Which is a problem of course, as the option should be on for some quizzes and off for others.

Has anyone else had this issue, and perhaps found a workaround or solution?

thanks.
Jacques

This is a very good thing to be doing.

I think there are two cases here:

  • If you use the preview icon on the Edit quiz page, then it should use the review options from the settings for that quiz to control the preview.
  • If you use the preview icon in the question bank, then it will use the review options from the last time you set the review options in the quiz preview window.

I think that explains what you are seeing.

I agree that this is probably not the best possible way that it could work.

Bonjour Jacques,

You can preview a "question" from the Editing quiz page or from the question bank. You can preview a "quiz" from the menu, on the right side of the page, available when you click on the quiz. Notice the difference between previewing a question or previewing a quiz.

Previewing a question is useful to quickly see how it is displayed. The Display options for a question do not affect the quiz's Review options. Note that the Review options affect all the questions in a quiz, and only those questions.

Also note that students will see the quiz with the questions it contains and not the questions individually. So it's the quiz's Review options that define what the students will see, not the questions' Display options.

The quiz preview is therefore the closest thing to what the students will see. However, there may be some differences between what you see and what students will see. So you can switch to a student role to see better what students will see. Ultimately, I advise you to create a student account, with your own access, and use it if you want to see exactly what students will see.

Thanks very much for those clarifications, Dominique and Tim, those were very useful!

And sorry about the tardy reply...
