Error 554 when trying to send outgoing mail

I have set up a new moodle installation as follows:

- Moodle Version 3.7
- Windows Server 2008
- PHP 7.1
- SMTP Server with credentials

I have set up the outgoing email configuration, and I am trying to send a test mail.

Everything is looking good, server authentication works, but the logfile results in the following error:

SMTP ERROR: DATA END command failed: 554 Sender address not allowed for this authenticated session

I assume that the from address in the mail header is causing this:

CLIENT -> SERVER: From: "=?utf-8?B?SmVucyBGZWx0ZW4gKMO8YmVyIENTRCBDQU1QVVMp?="

I have googled for this issue and read a dozen posts to no avail, any help would be greatly appreciated.
