I'm afraid Journal will certainly disappear in the future development. As a K-8 educator I'd love this journal very much it meets my need perfectly for my class. Which I know that it is just an enable away though, but please don't take it out for the future developments.
Well I haven't tried the new assingment moodle yet as Martin said it perefoms like journal too.

Yes I agree online assignment is not the same as Journal and this is defnitely needed. Maybe the upcoming blog feature will provide similar possibilities but I heard recently that it may not be ready for 1.6

I'm hoping more developers and expert users of moodle will post their own screencasts of Moodle! There are so many things that Moodle can do to aid the over-worked teacher and make teachers more like managers of learning than secretaries!
