Automatic and manual groups in Moodle courses

We use Moodle 3.3

We have a challenge that must be frequent in higher education environments.

Consider, for example, a Moodle course with 70 students:

  • Group A: 40 are from Subject 1 of Degree 1
  • Group B: 10 are from Subject 2 of Degree 2
  • Group C: 20 are continuing education students

We would like to create and maintain, by synchronization with an external database (SIS), these 3 groups with their corresponding members.

Not only this.

We would like the teachers to be able to create manual groups for specific activities in the same Moodle course. For example:

  • Group 1 for Activity 3
  • Group 2 for Activity 3
  • Group 3 for Activity 3
  • Group 4 for Activity 3

And we would like these groups, and their members, not to be eliminated in the above synchronization process.

Does anyone have this type of architecture already configured? Any clue or help?

If this is not the best place to ask this question, apologies!
