Using Moodle for Staff Micro Credentialing

Just to give an idea of how we are using Moodle for micro credentialing and staff professional development.

There are some things that are just required and need to get done such as Bloodborne Pathogen Training.  Others such as ADA are meant to be resources and on-going reference for staff so that we can produce more accessible material.

Using Moodle's activity and course completion we issue badges each year and staff must complete the 4 required courses.  I'm not sure where this will end up going but we are just getting started with moving staff PD off our main classroom Moodle site.  We did this because there may be reports or plugins that make sense for use with staff in a more controlled environment than in a general setting where teachers might not know how to properly setup or use the plugin.

We use the Fordson theme and the Easy Enrollment Plugin.

We have been using Moodle for only eight years and this was the first year we used it for District Compliance Training. Instead of having thee separate courses, we organized the three training (Responsible Use - Student Data Confidentiality - Seclusion and Restraint) modules into a single course where staff could monitor their progress using auto-completion. The modules consisted of quiz modules that the staff had to complete at a certain proficiency.

The HR staff were enrolled with teacher roles so that they could monitor the district 2,000 staff members progress. With this many users we had to show HR how to export the Activity Completion report and grade exports to generate simple reports to follow-up on staff that needed a little encouragement. HR was very pleased with the process and we learned a lot from the first year of implementation of compliance training. Looking forward to refinements to make the process better for the next year.

We discussed using badges, but decided for the first time to just release a hidden label so that the staff knew that they completed the compliance course satisfactory.  What were hoping for was that we could have pushed the date of completion of the course into our HR information system similar to what we do when our students pass their state required Civics Exam in Moodle to our Student Information System. No luck with the HR system, but have had great success with our integration with our Student Information System.

BPS also use the Fordson theme, but for some of the support staff it was a little difficult to self-enroll into a course. The EasyEnrollment Plugin might be something we should think about using going forward. Can this enrollment plugin be located on a category page that has the Professional Learning courses because BPS has enrollments and course creation automated between Moodle and PowerSchool and wouldn't want to confuse the students on the front page.

PS - we are in the process of developing a high school internship course using micro-credentials for students/teachers to monitor progress through a course instead of seat time. Still in the planning phase...

The Easy Enrollment plugin will make enrollment MUCH MUCH easier.  Getting a student from login to learning is why we built Easy Enrollment plugin and the Fordson theme.  It makes things quick and easy while providing the most versatility for staff.

It might be possible to put the form on another page as it is just a form generated by the Easy Enrollment Plugin.  It's a standard mustache template.  I'm not sure how you would handle that though.  The plugin generates an enrollment form on http://rootmoodle.com/enrol/easy/

You could put that link in course descriptions or anywhere on the site you want to instruct teachers to go to it to enroll.

Otherwise the best course of action is a new site for training as you might want plugins and special settings that are just for training and not necessarily what you want on the main learning platform that teachers rely on.

What we found was that a new install of Moodle was best for training.
