You gave me the answer in the first paragraph.
" If I switch my role to student, I do not see any discussions because I am not a member of any group."
I gave myself Teacher and Student status and assigned myself into the group.
It works the way I want. Switching to other groups allows me quick access to seeing what any group layout looks like.
Granted, I have switching to do but for me, for now, this answers the question.
