I want to see what the assignments looks like from the student side relative to the a group.
As it is, when I "Switch Role to Student" nothing shows up.
Steve, I think that I know what you mean. I am using groups for forum discussions. If I switch my role to student, I do not see any discussions because I am not a member of any group. In your case, you are referring to group "assignments," and might be having the same problem.
Why not add a bogus student, put this student into a group, then log in as this student?
Yes, When I have two screens available then I would have two instances of Moodle open, one for me and one for the zombie student. It is still a hassle having to refresh screens but it works.
It is not so easy then I have only one screen.

I gave myself Teacher and Student status and assigned myself into the group.
It works the way I want. Switching to other groups allows me quick access to seeing what any group layout looks like.
Granted, I have switching to do but for me, for now, this answers the question.
