Have you looked at the possibility of using the Podcast (mod_pcast) activity? It has a number of ways to present files, by alphabet, category, date, or author. It also works with video files. Each entry shows a title, summary, category, the media file (within a player), author, created date and last updated date. If anything is posted by a student, the activity can be set to require approval before anyone else can see/hear it.
