main menu block design

This is a question about the main menu blocks, the ones down the middle of the page (couldn't find anywhere else to ask about this).  I like to make the block be a "teaser" for the particular happenings within it.  So I like to put a picture, or a quote, or a few words about what will be going on in that block. But the place for editing this has very few fonts available, and won't accept cut and paste from word or word art where some nice titles can be put together.  Also, for pics, it accepts only gifs and jpg's and tell me clipart (bmp) is not "visual".

How can I get these blocks looking nice, with nice titles and "visuals'/  I can't always find a gif or jpg that suits.  Also, can I change my bmps to gifs somehow?  Obviously a newbie.

Hello.

Firstly, do you actually mean the main menu block or are you talking about something inside the course? If you mean the main menu block then I don't think you can do any of what you need - you want the HTML block.

Anyway, as for the fonts range - this is a www issue and not a moodle issue. The reason web applications tend to offer only a few 'safe' fonts is if you pick a nice font on your site and then I come along with a mac or a linux machine I will not have that font on my machine. My computer will then try and guess the closest font which will often just look a mess.

As for word art, what you can do is create a screen capture of your word art using a free application such as screen hunter.

To change your bmps to jpegs or giffs I would recommend the free application irfanview (I assume you are using Windows)

Assuming you are talking about the topic/week blocks down the center of the main course menu page, remember you can insert labels also.  I usually just have a title as the topic summary, and then use labels to add other pictures, text, and instructions that I want the students to see in the course menu display for that topic.
