Numerous Upgrade Problems

Dear all,

I have recently upgraded an "almost working" site to 1.4.5 and a "prototype" site to 1.5. and have encountered a few problems. The 1.4.5 is defaulted to jp_utf8, and when the main page is entered all the Japanese present is displayed as anticipated. However, if I log in as a user who has the default language set to "english", "mojibake" appears (this didn't happen before upgrading, possibly because I think a cookie may have been set indicating that the english user preferred UTF8 encoding). If I then change the browser encoding to UTF8, the page appears correctly, but unfortunately this does not "stick" if another page is gone to after that. This is obviously a very big problem where the glossary is concerned, because every time a term is looked up it is necessary to change the encoding back to UTF8 again. I may have the same problem with 1.5 but am not sure at the moment because I am currently fiddling with the glossary and it is now no longer working. Is this a genuine bug, or am I just doing something stupid as usual?

Also, when I put an entry in the glossary, if I do so with the encoding set to English and leave the encoding in English it works fine, but if I change the encoding to jp_UTF8 the search stops working (I think Yoshida sensei may have already provided a patch for this in the Japanese forum where somebody had what I think was the same sort of problem).

Also, if anybody can send me to some good resources regarding the differences between how encoding in general is handled and how encoding in Japanese in particular works (particularly within moodle and with respect to PHP) it would be much appreciated as I have been attempting to follow some instructions from Yoshida sensei regarding how to correct a problem regarding how to export an xml file from a glossary, put some further entries into it externally, and then bring it back into the glossary again, but I am struggling a little bit (OK, that's putting mildly! I need to study PHP A LOT MORE but there just aren't enough hours in the day!).

Regards!

James Phillips, getting greyer by the minute!
