I would like students to be able upload images in a forum using the standard upload popup but that the image appear as a link in the forum post, not as an image, so that other students can download it.
Does anyone know how to force moodle not to display this image for this type of activity only?

On moodle 2.+ there seems to be a change from the handling of attachments / images, as in forum (and it appears glossary) Moodle automatically displays the image, without offering any display controls (unlinke the image link above).
In my view this is highly problematic, and the students get quite upset that they lose quality in this way.
The workaround is that they load externally (own flickr or googledocs account) and then link the image above, which will give them full control over appearance, position etc.
Currently looking for an alternative, otherwise this'll need to go on the tracker.
