HI, is it possible to setup a forum on the frontpage where users can create and view only their posts, and the teachers reply to them?

This feature is not available in the standard forum module, but it is available in ForumNG. http://moodle.org/plugins/view.php?plugin=mod_forumng

I think it is called the 'Study advice forum type'.

Thanks, If I can get it to work, this would be exactly what I needed. That way I can make a billing support forum where private information will not be seen by other students.

I think a database module using comments and a high number of posts required before being visible to others would work, too.

There are two other options, both not the best.

1) set up a group for each member, and set up a forum with groups/groupings ON.  This may be the best way under current Moodle.  Yu can mix and mach as much as you lile using Groupings.

2) Use messaging.

I have asked for this functionality in the tracker, but my suggestion was rejected.  http://tracker.moodle.org/browse/MDL-27223
