Students scores turned to zero

Students scores turned to zero

Hi Gordon,

I've just done something stupid and turned nearly all the students' scores for a QuizPort to zero in the gradebook.

I came across a reply of yours explaining to Jeff that a "quiz" in a QuizPort that is not actually a quiz but an introductory html page can be given "no weighting". As I had a JGloss which is not really an exercise, I thought it would be a good idea to set it to no weighting. I know I should have saved their scores before making any change but I didn't. blush When I saw the results on their scores, I quickly changed it back to 100% but the scores haven't been recalculed - or only for one or two students. The QuizPort seem to be only taking into account the first "quiz". See the example below: the JGloss is the first quiz.

Is there a way out? Or do I have to do all the calculations by hand?

You still have access to the course if necessary.

Glenys,
I have quite a lot to get through in the next few days, so don't hold your breath ;-), but I will try to come and look later this week.

Thanks for the private email Glenys. I was able to access your site.

I experimented with changing the grading method for the QuizPort and the scoring method for the quizzes in order to trigger the recalculation of the grades, but the same thing happened to me as happened to you, namely when the first quiz's weighting was set to zero, the unit grades seemed to be set ot zero.

However, I had more luck on the QuizPort index page (the page that lists all QuizPort activities in a course). From that page I selected the QuizPort in question, and then selected "Regrade" from the menu at the top of the page. The grades for "Anne" were correctly calcualted, and it looks to me as if the other students' grades are also correct.

For the time-being, things look OK, but could you please check that some one attempting these quizzes afresh has their grade calcualted correctly.

When I have time I will try to investigate further as to the root cause of the problem. For the moment though, we have a workaround.

regards
Gordon

Hi Gordon,

I didn't know about that "Regrade" button.

I'm afraid the grades still aren't right. Now they all seem to have as their grade for this QuizPort whatever was their score in the second quiz.

I tried clicking the Regrade button but nothing changes.

Thanks for trying.

Cheers,

Glenys

Hi Glenys,
I enabled Server->Debugging on your site and noticed an error about $gradelimit being undefined. I remember this error from earlier in the year, and I also remember fixing it.

Please arrange for the QuizPort module on your site to be upgraded. I thnk this will fix the regrading errors and you will be able to regrade this QuizPort.

The most recent version of QuizPort has some other goodies, including incremental scoring for Sequitur.

Please let me know how you get on.

thanks
Gordon

Solved! Re: Students scores turned to zero

by Glenys Hanson -

Hi Gordon,

With the latest version of QuizPort I was able to regrade and now everyone has scores in the 90s - which is what they're used to. Thanks so much. approve

Rant:

I really wish I could make a copy of the course with the user information so I could experiment with regrading locally. But on shared hosting when I try to backup the course that way it times out. I find it very frustrating and rather scary not to have a backup - I could easily do something silly and wipe out some of the students' work. But apparently nothing can be done.

End of rant.

Cheers,

Glenys

Hi Glenys,
glad to hear you can regrade now.

Regarding the backup of large courses, it may be possible to backup the whole Moodle database on the shared hosting server, perhaps via the hosting control panel, then download the database backup file to a server which does not have timeout limits, e.g. on your localhost, where you can create a copy of your Moodle site and experiment.

I can certainly empathize with your worry about not having backups !

Gordon

Hi Gordon,

Thanks for your suggestions but I don't personally have access to the database in the course in question. Josph Réseau showed me how to chop up the course into bits and reassemble it locally. But it's not practical to do that weekly. All I can do is export the gradebook as an Excell file. Now I'm using the ForumNG, I can also export those as Word files.

Cheers,

Glenys
