hi all

i just want to ask if anyone knows if there is a way to make the quiz secure

plus the secure option, i want the student not to be able to use any resource on the PC until the time of the quiz has finished...

so just the questions of the quiz, and the references in its description will be available for the students..

thanx

If you can control the environment - that is administer the tests in a computer lab, you can do it but it would be independent of Moodle. Otherwise I don't see how it could be done. Even if you could, they could simply use a second computer to find out answers.

Plus many of them will have an internet connected computer in their pockets (AKA mobile phone)

It rather depends on what you mean by "secure".

Do you mean "stop people stealing my questions", "make sure students are who they say they are", something else?

You can't do that unless they are in a completely locked down machine (in a locked down environment). Even then, it would be complicated to get working.

I am not an assessment expert but I would ask that you carefully consider if this is the best way to go about this. With a suitable range of questions and allotted time will it actually matter if they "look at their books"?

if i considered that my students in a room and i can watch them so:

they don't have internet connections, books or any other way to cheat

but i just want a tool maybe to be downloaded on the computers in this room, so while this quiz is being made the students can't reach any resource

A company called Respondus makes something called a "lock-down browser" that seems to do what you describe:

http://www.respondus.com/products/lockdown.shtml

But I have no experience with it and have no idea whether it actually works. I tend to agree with the other posters that there are real-world, authentic assessment methods that allow students access to materials they have in their everyday lives. - Peter

Sorry - no ideas. But the manufacturer (Respondus) should have some ideas.

See if the Safe Exam Browser works for you. Of course if you want to prevent other resources on the computer, and not only internet access, you can prepare a specific image which contains nothing but what is essential for running the exam and apply it to all the designated machines. smile

As others have said, controlling what happens on the student's computer while they do the test is not something that Moodle can do, because Moodle runs on the web server. You need to install some software on the student's computer (or on the computer in the computers in the computer lab you are using.)

I know of two such bits of software, both of which have already been mentioned here:

1. Safe Exam Browser, which is open source, and already integrated with Moodle 1.9.

2. Respondus lock-down browser. This is commercial software, and at the moment to integrate it with Moodle you have to install a custom patch. Respondus have been working on a new-improved integration, and they sent me a patch some time before I went on holiday, and I still have not managed to find time to review it properly. However, there will be a proper integration for Respondus lock-down browser in Moodle in the near future, I hope.
