problem installing moodle - administrator page not appearing during installation

I am trying to install Moodle on my Yahoo India hosting account.

I tried installing 1.9.3+version, which I could not complete, there was initially problem of register_globals being ON, I switched it off by creating a php.ini file in moodle folder, and putting the directive in that file.  Then the installation went smoothly, I chose attended installation, so, could observe all tables/indexes etc getting created; suddenly, the installation got over, i.e, after pressing continue, I was presented with the 'normal' moodle login page.  i.e, admin user password was not entered by me at all, because that page did not appear during installation.  After searching this forum, I found some 'passchange/php' script, which I used to change or rather create a new password.  With this password when I tried to access the page, it gave the following error ;

server error that affects your login session was detected. Please login again or restart your browser.

I am not able to access the moodle admin page at all, even though moodle is probably installed properly, the home page (requiring login) appears when I enter the correct url.
I deleted all moodle files, deleted the database and tried installing 1.8 stable version, thinking it could be problem with compatibility with Mysql/php. To my utter dismay, the same sequence of events followed. I did not get any administrator configuration page nor the page requiring me to put the site-name etc.
I tried searching the forum, found few threads discussing this, but no solution.
Where did I mess up? Any hints please?
Thanks.

I will add some more information ;

The MySQL version is 4.1.14

PHP version is 4.3.11

The PHP config info is (taken from phpMyadmin)

./configure' '--prefix=/usr' '--enable-fastcgi' '--with-config-file-path=/usr/lib/php' '--enable-memory-limit' '--enable-bcmath' '--enable-calendar' '--enable-exif' '--enable-mbstring=all' '--enable-mbregex' '--with-curl' '--with-dom' '--with-dom-xslt' '--with-gdbm' '--with-gettext' '--with-iconv' '--with-gd' '--with-jpeg-dir' '--with-png-dir' '--with-tiff-dir' '--with-xpm-dir=/usr/X11R6' '--with-zlib-dir' '--with-ttf' '--with-freetype-dir' '--with-t1lib' '--enable-gd-native-ttf' '--with-mcrypt' '--with-mhash' '--with-mime-magic' '--with-ming' '--with-openssl' '--with-pspell' '--with-regex' '--enable-wddx' '--with-xmlrpc' '--enable-xslt' '--with-xslt-sablot' '--with-zip' '--disable-posix'

Is it compatibility problem with lower version of PHP and Mysql? Should I go for much lower version of moodle say 1.5?  Kindly advise, as I need to put content into my web-site and moodle is not up, since admin login is not working;

At least, may I know is there a way to create some additional users, without accessing admin panel?

Thanks,

suresh.

Hi Tony, were you able to resolve this problem? I am havingt he same problem myself. Very frustrating. Moodle is great but when it comes to solving technical issues it can be a long hunt.

I had the same (or very similar) problem for quite a while.

Eventually tracked it down to a php problem - which was resolved by uninstalling 5.2.2-9 and installing php 5.3.0.
