MC Offline quiz module

The Moodle MC Offline quiz module adds paper-and-pencil multiple-choice quizzes to Moodle. In offline quizzes students mark answers to questions on a sheet of paper (the answer form). The students' answer forms are evaluated and graded automatically by the offline quiz module.

More precisely, a complete offline quiz consists (at least) of the following steps:

  • A teacher creates an offline quiz in Moodle and adds multiple-choice questions, all-or-nothing multiple-choice questions or description questions (text) to the quiz. This is very similar to creating online quizzes (standard Moodle quizzes).
  • From the question lists the teacher creates question sheets and answer forms as PDF (DOCX) documents using the module.
  • The question sheets and answer forms are handed out to students for the actual quiz. The students mark the answers they think are correct in the answer form.
  • The teacher scans the filled-in answer forms and uploads the resulting images into the offline quiz. The scanned answer forms are evaluated and graded automatically by the module.
  • If necessary, the teacher corrects errors that might have occurred due to mistakes made by the students or due to bad scan quality.

After results have been created in an offline quiz, students can review their result as usual. If the teacher allows it, students can also see the scanned answer forms and which markings have been recognised as crosses.

The module supports up to six groups which are not related to Moodle course groups. Each group can contain a different set of questions in a different order. Separate question sheets and answer forms are created for the different offline quiz groups.

The module also supports lists of participants which are useful for checking which students actually took part in the exam. Lists of participants are pre-filled with students in Moodle. PDF versions of those lists can be created in the module for easy marking during the exam. The marked lists can be uploaded and evaluated automatically.

The offline quiz module is used intensively at different Austrian universities for mass exams. Hundreds of students can be easily examined at the same time (given enough seating space in lecture halls) without the need for expensive e-testing equipment.

Copy the module code directly to the "mod/offlinequiz" directory. Open the messages page in the administration area to automatically start the installation.

The automatic analysis of questionnaires requires the activation of an appropriate cronjob (see README.txt).

I installed the Offline Quiz in Moodle 3.0 and I'am having problems with cron. Is there a way to put cron on a button on the screen for the user?

Another detail, the answer form have no way out with the student's code and name?
That would make life easier for teachers.

    Thank you very much

it is not possible to implement a button, since the cronjob takes a while to scan the pages (around 20 seconds per page on my local computer e.g.). We don't want the users to have to wait 20 minutes after a big upload, especially since you already should have a cron installed for moodle itself.

About the real Name of the students: This is actually one of the most requested features, but not that easy to implement since the algorithm would not allow such a change at the moment. We are working on making this change possible in the mid to long future, but it's not the first priority at the moment.

    Best regards

    Thank you for your information.

Now I would like to know which ID number to fill in form for answers? I put the idUser and it is informing that there is no user.

    User ID Model: 0007627

    Thank you again.

The offlinequiz-plugin for 3.3 will be released very soon. We maid the plugin Boost-Theme compatible, thats why it took a little bit longer this time. We will make a comment here, once its released. If you want to use the beta-Version of 3.3 look at our master in the github repository.

Hi, I'm having a little trouble with the scanned PDFs being recognized properly. It seems like it is having trouble recognizing where the boxes should be on the page, and it's not recognizing the answer area at all. I wonder if this is related to the answer sheet being printed on 8.5" x 11" paper rather than A4 paper? I have some screenshots of what I am getting here: Can you provide any assistance?

hi Carly, unfortunately the offlinequiz only supports A4 at the moment. The US-Letter format is not supported. Its a feature we have on our list, but since its not easy to implement (the scanning algorithm is not easily changeable in that matter) this feature will not come very soon. Once our new scanning algorithm is rewritten, we will work on that feature.

Thomas, I tried printing on US Letter without scaling, and although the guides did match up the system still did not seem to know where the boxes were supposed to be. I was hoping that would work, but it did not. I tested the system with an A4 answer sheet, and it worked as advertised. Mostly I'm posting this as a warning to others in the US who might be struggling with this. Thanks for responding so quickly.

Hello again, I see from your git repo that being able to use the custom profile fields for the key identifier is on your list and possibly triaged. Do you have a roadmap that shows when this feature might become available? I'm hoping to be able to promote this module across my campus, but I need this feature to truly streamline the workflow. Thank you.

We are just starting to use this plugin. It is great. Congratulations!

We have an issue that we don't know how to deal with. Most of our users have 8-digit IDs in the Moodle user table. But some earlier ones have only 6 digits. If we set up the formula as a[8]=username, the 8-digit students are identified correctly but not the 6-digit ones.

    Any help appreciated.
